Tips on making those New Year's Resolutions stick
People know that they "should" stop smoking, lose those extra pounds, or deal with whatever they want to change. And right after the Holidays they think, "I can do it". Their will power feels real strong and steps are taken to move forward, but before they know it, the old habits start to creep back in, and they have given up on their goal(s). Then they often begin to beat themselves up, believing that they are weak or lazy. This can add to their feelings of disappointment, and they may end up eating even more junk food, or smoke more.
Most people don't realize the reason we usually revert back to an old habit is because that habit is programmed in our sub-conscious mind. The sub-conscious mind will win out over our will power around 98% of the time. People usually have no idea how powerful and strong our sub-conscious mind is.
In order for you to get your resolutions to stick, you need to get your sub-conscious mind to work with you, not against you. That is when changes become easy. However, in the beginning, getting the sub-conscious mind reprogrammed can feel like effort. Remember when you first learned how to drive, how to ride a bike, or to type? At first it was difficult and it took a lot of repetition to really know it, but over time, all those skills or habits then became "second nature". You didn't have to think how to do it, and it was finally easy. At that point, you have programmed your sub-conscious mind. When you can do something without having to consciously think how to do it, you sub-conscious is handling it.
If you had ridden a bike a lot as a child, you could get on a bike even after 20 years of not riding, and still know how to ride it. You can't truly remove a habit from the sub-conscious mind, but you can give it new programs and make those new habits the default programs. The key is to make sure the sub-conscious mind knows which programs are to be active.
If you are wondering what your sub-conscious programs are, both in habits and beliefs, all you have to do is to see how your life is playing out. If, in the past you have lost the battle of your New Years' Resolutions, then you can be assured that you have a sub-conscious program that is not allowing you to change.
Fortunately, once you understand what is happening and realize that you need to reprogram your sub-conscious mind, you are half way there. Here are a few tips that can help you to reprogram your sub-conscious mind.
1. Get a very clear defined goal that is measurable, and choose a time when you want to have it accomplished.
2. Figure out what kind of positive emotion you would experience if you obtained that goal.
3. Then, with as much repetition as you did to learn how to type or drive a car, visualize with positive emotion your end result.
4. The best times to do this are as you are waking up or falling asleep.5. Do this on a daily bases for at least 3 weeks.
Your sub-conscious mind pays much more attention to thoughts that create a picture in your mind, with lots of emotion, and will especially pay attention if the visualizations are repeated on a daily bases. These tips and others are what athletes use to improve their performance.
That is also what happens to people who worry; they are giving their sub-conscious mind a blueprint to create what they are worrying about, especially if they do it repeatedly, with mental pictures and emotions that are connected to those thoughts. Therefore, do this process for something that you do want, rather than what you do not want.
