So You are a business owner. Or youre about to become one. Congratulations. Entrepreneurship is a profession, an art and a vocation for people like you that is for those with courage, passion and a determination to carve your own path in the world. And if you are committed to pursuing that life, then I think you deserve to have all the information you need to succeed.

Let me share with you three big lessons that I have learned, repeatedly, in my years as a Toronto business coach and as an entrepreneur. This lesson comes in 3 parts. First, you can succeed. Anyone can succeed. Success is not reserved for the uniquely talented or granted only to the brilliant, the talented or the good looking. Success is available to you. Second, there is a hidden enemy, an adversary, to anyone reaching for success. And Third, most entrepreneurs do not take the simple steps necessary to slay that enemy.

I call that enemy L.O.K. or The LOK. The L.O.K. usually operates in the background. He entices you to make bad decisions. He lures you into thinking things are ok when they are not. And when you do notice him, the L.O.K. presents you with all kinds of reasons to believe that he isnt a problem for you at all.

But heres the sad truth. Almost 60% of business started today will close within 5 years and 70% will be gone within 10 years. And of those that do survive only about 30% earn a profit. Daunting right? Well maybe not. You see, more than cash shortages or labour shortages or economic shifts, the thing that really

kills most small businesses is the L.O.K. L O K Lack of Knowledge.

You were likely drawn to business ownership for one or more of 3 reasons. You have a personal passion. You have a talent in a particular field whether that be hair dressing, carpentry, law, web design, chemical engineering and so on. Or, you were forced into it by circumstance. All great reasons. But one big thing is missing. No one has actually shown you all thats involved in making a small business a success. And that Lack of Knowledge about critical areas for success can lead you to make extremely costly mistakes.

Let me be clear, playing pin the tail on the donkey is a highly entertaining game at childrens parties. It is a terrible way to learn to run a business.

And unfortunately, that is essentially what the practice of learn by doing in business is: a highly expensive and emotionally taxing adult version of pin the tail on the donkey. Why in heavens name would you want to do that to your self?

Now heres the good news. Those daunting stats dont have to apply to you. They exist because of Lack of Knowledge. But you can slay the LOK. With knowledge, you turn the odds dramatically in your favour. And Id like to share with you one extremely important piece of knowledge:

Have you ever watched Olympic racing? Whether it be running or speed skating. Youll see that there are always 2 or 3 athletes at the front of the pack. It may switch from race to race who wins, but they are always at the front. Then there are the also-rans. However, the difference between the front pack and the also-rans is often less than a tenth of a second. But the difference in rewards is huge, isnt it? That gap is what I call the Victory Gap. It is the consistent distance between the winners and the wannabes. Its the same in business. You dont have to be immensely better than the competition.

You just have to be a little bit better, but consistently so.

So, how do get consistently better? By focusing on the things that matter. Look at marathon runners and sprinters. Sprinters have massive upper body strength. Marathoners: not so much. Why? Upper body strength is critical to success in sprinting; it isnt for marathons. In business, there are 9 critical victory factors for success. They are called critical because weakness in any one of them will limit your potential for success.


There are three steps to building your strengths in these Critical victory factors:

One: Become clear about the areas you need to learn. Two: learn them. Three: Apply what you learn. Simple.
