. The good thing is that not all of the transcription equipment you would need are expensive. The four things that you will need in your career as a general transcriptionist would be listening devices, transcription foot pedals, a laptop or computer and some transcription software.

Listening Devices

No matter how great your speaker is, you would need something better, such as headphones or ear bud headphones. This transcription equipment is important as you are after all dealing with audio files and you need to be able to clearly hear what was being said. It would be a great help if you can acquire headphones that have the noise-canceling feature. This feature would reduce background noise and reduces the sound distortion that usually happens with speakers. They should also be able to produce high-def sound and if you are using headphones, it is better if they are lightweight, as you will have them on your head for long periods. If you use earbud types, you need to get a feel first because as it is in a more direct contact, it can irritate your ears. You may also want to attach headphone amplifiers when needed.

Transcription Foot Pedal

Now, when you are working on a transcription job, your hands would be busy enough typing away and keeping notes about audio. There are several instances when you need to pause or rewind and to control the volume. In these cases, a transcription foot pedal would be handy as you would not have to fumble with the controls using your hands. All you have to do is make a little foot maneuvering; no need to altogether stop typing. Transcription foot pedals are usually used by professional medical transcriptionists. Sometimes, this gadget comes with digital transcription kits.

Computer or Laptop

If you are a medical transcriptionist or a home-based general transcriptionist, and you do not have your dictating gear, you should at least get a computer or a laptop with the mandatory hi-speed internet connection. Clients might not be satisfied if you have dial-up or any other unstable or slow connection as it may affect your reliability and productivity.

Transcription Software

In transcription, efficiency is the byword. Being as efficient as possible means that you get to do more jobs and you get paid more. There is a host of transcription software that would make your work easier. They are necessary for an integrated connection between your headphones, foot pedal and dictation files.

Professional Dictating Equipment

If you are going to take dictation, you are going to need these gadgets. Most legal professionals do it, and so do transcriptionists on the go. They allow you to quickly capture audio files and to transfer and transcribe those files later on.

Times surely have changed, and everything seems to have gone digital, which is not at all a bad thing. While you can still use that mini cassette, you need to keep in mind that you would probably need to transfer those audio files to your computer. If you are going to deal with digital files, it is better that you go all digital and have transcription equipment that spells compatibility and convenience.
