Tuxedo Measurements Explained By The Experts

Tuxedos are always the appropriate dress choice for formal events

, and whether you are planning to attend a prom, gala, or wedding, dressing for a special occasion can be enjoyable if you take the time to plan ahead.

No matter whether you feel a traditional Ralph Lauren tux or a contemporary Calvin Klein wedding tux is your style you can make sure you look and feel your best by having it fitted properly. By ensuring you have the right style and fit for your tuxedo, you will spend less time fretting about an uncomfortable jacket and more time moving, dancing, and enjoying yourself. A wedding tux in particular should fit comfortably since the groom will likely be wearing it for a large portion of the day, including the reception.

Here are a few tips to help you properly measure and fit your wedding tuxedo:

Take the Proper Measurements

Most designer options including Ralph Lauren tuxes or Calvin Klein tuxes are meticulously crafted for a comfortable and flattering fit, but to ensure that you are comfortable in your wedding tux, or in a tuxedo for a prom or special event, it is important to take the correct fit measurements. By carefully having tuxedo properly fitted, you can help ensure that you are able to move, dance, and eat freely.

- Neck: measure just above your collarbone all the way around your neck. You should be able to place one finger comfortably between your neck and the collar of your shirt without it appearing too loose.

- Chest: measure as high on the chest as you can, going under the arm with arms straight down at your side. This measurement is used for both the shirt and tuxedo jacket so it is important to measure twice.

- Sleeve length: measure from the back base of the neck, along the shoulder and down the arm to approximately one inch past the wrist. This measurement is also used for both the shirt and tuxedo jacket and should be taken when the arm is extended down along the side of the body.

- Waist: measure around the waist at the height of the navel and top of the hip bones. Tuxedo pants are meant to fit higher than casual pants, so it is important to measure at the proper level. You can also add one or two fingers between the body and the tape to leave room for the big wedding feast or pre-dance dinner.

- Inseam: measure from top of the inside of the thigh down to the inside arch of your shoe.

- Out seam: measure from the outside arch of your shoe along the outside of the leg up to the height of your navel.

- Hips and Thighs: men who are more muscular may also want to measure their hips and thighs to ensure the pants leave enough room for comfortable movement. In both cases, measure the widest part of the area.

By taking accurate measurements, you can ensure your tux fits right no matter what the style or brand so you can feel more confident and comfortable and able to enjoy yourself.
