UK Government Scraps Disability Living Allowance in favour of a new Personal Independence Payment

The UK government have announced plans to scrap the current Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and replace it with a newly revised PIP (Personal Independence Payment) leaving thousands of Scots who are in debt and claiming the current benefits unsure of how the changes will affect them.

The government claims that the new PIP will help promote fairness, simplification and better assessment. The new scheme will replace the current DLA scheme by 2013.

While the government have announced the plans, the individual details of the new criteria have not been released as yet to the general public.

Trust Deed Scotland, the leading introducers of Trust Deeds in Scotland is calling for the government to provide instant clarification over what the changes will be, in order to prepare current recipients of the benefit and settle anxieties that people may have with the revisions.

The Scottish based group spoke to Betty McNeill, someone who currently receives DLA and is currently on a Trust Deed with a leading Scottish insolvency practitioner.

Betty commented "I am only three months into a 3 year Trust Deed and I'm worried that they [The Department for Work and Pensions] will take my benefits off me before I complete the Trust Deed, forcing me into sequestration [Bankruptcy in Scotland] .

I feel let down by the government as this new scheme hasn't been explained to me properly and I am scared that I will become a victim of the so called necessary welfare reforms. Will they decide that my Agoraphobia condition is no longer an acceptable disability to receive my DLA for? "

A spokesman for Trust Deed Scotland advised "There are several thousand Scottish residents with debts who are just like Betty and receive DLA. We are always here for our clients and we will be settling anxieties that they have over these proposed changes.

Thankfully, these changes will not happen for another couple of years and so we hope that our clients are informed in plentiful time. There are procedures in place for a change in circumstances while on a Trust Deed, if anyone is worried we urge them to call us immediately."

If you are struggling with debt and claiming DLA, you can speak to an advisor at a free money advisory service such as the CAS or CCCS.
