Understanding Your Options To Deal With A Lost Tooth

Whether caused by years of decay or a sudden injury

, a lost tooth is always an unwelcome event. In this situation, however, it is important for you to not panic. Thanks to modern dental techniques, your dentist today has several options that can effectively replace a missing tooth. Depending on your situation, your dentist will be able to recommend the best course of treatment for you.

Dental Implants

The longest lasting option to replace a missing tooth is to have your dentist use a dental implant. A dental implant is a replacement tooth root that is directly installed into the bone socket of a missing tooth and attached to your jawbone. After the implant is put in, it will act as an anchor for a replacement crown. Once your dentist has secured the titanium implant to your jawbone, you will need to wait between six and twelve weeks for your gums to heal around the implant. Once they do, your dentist will take an impression in order to create a crown that will fit perfectly in your mouth. Once that is ready, your dentist will permanently attach it to your implant and the process will be complete. After it is installed, a dental implant can last 25 years or in some cases an entire lifetime.

Dental Bridges

Another popular way to replace a tooth is through the use of a dental bridge. A bridge is an artificial replacement tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will begin by anesthetizing the area and reducing the two teeth that will hold crowns. After this, he or she will take a detailed impression of the area in order to create a bridge that will fit perfectly. In the two to three weeks in between appointments, your dentist will provide you with a temporary bridge to wear. Once your permanent bridge arrives, your dentist will do a final check to make sure the coloring and fit are correct. If they are, he or she will then use a special cement to permanently attach the bridge. Once put in, a dental bridge generally lasts about 15 years, or in some cases longer.

Dentures

If you have lost many or all of your teeth, your dentist may decide that a set of dentures are the best option for you. If you have only lost several of your teeth, your dentist will give you a set of partial dentures. These will use a combination of your natural teeth and artificial ones to fully restore your smile. If you have lost all or almost all of your teeth, your dentist will give you a complete set of removable dentures to wear. Once your dentures are ready, they will provide you with a very natural tooth appearance. No one will be able to tell that your teeth are anything but completely natural.
