The trauma of domestic violence can be emotionally paralytic and even ruin one's life
. However, "silence" can be used to facilitate your recovery from the horrors inflicted by the symptoms of emotional trauma?
The discipline of mind-body medicine has been advancing rapidly and now it is being applied to facilitate recovery from emotional abuse. After all, there is a clear relationship between what we think and what we feel emotionally.
Through experience, you know that certain thoughts you have are associated with certain emotions e.g. mad, glad, sad, afraid, worried, excited. Take the time now to remember a specific emotionally-charged event.
Now visualize it with lots of detail and notice the emotions that you begin to feel. If you visualize a different type of event you will notice different emotions coming to the fore.
What's the point? When your mind is activated in certain ways, your body will be activated as well. And conversely, when your mind experiences serenity and tranquility, the effects will be transmitted to your body.
A central tenet of mind-body medicine is that your body's natural inherent inclination, when it is injured, is to heal itself. Not only that, but when not deterred by external events, it will do so effortlessly.
Consider this: Why does the time-tested technique of getting rest when you're ill usually lead to recovery? Because when your body is at rest, it gathers strength to facilitate its own healing agents in attacking the toxins and other disease-generating agents that are threatening it.
This is where the deceptively simple tool of silence emerges. For crying out loud, what does silence have to do with relieving trauma and one's recovery from it?
When you deeply relax your mind and body so that you experience no purposeful cognitive activity, relief from the stressful outcomes of thinking starts to occur. Deep tranquility is the foundation and facilitator for your body's natural healing activities.
Your lack of purposive neuropsychological activity sets the foundation for the automatic clearing of stress that follows.
The resting and serene mind-body complex is a necessary condition for your body to automatically cleanse itself.
In this sense, "silence," deep serenity is your ultimate healer.
For example, being in a deeply quiet state is an essential condition for the practice of healing meditative practices.
Used as an enduring, regular practice, being able to totally rest in a state of tranquility is an important precursor for healing and resolving emotional abuse. If you have survived the terrors of emotional abuse or domestic violence you may be feeling confused, angry and overwhelmed.
If so, diligent practice and fine-tuning your ability to regulate your emotions will facilitate your resolution of trauma resulting from any violence or emotional abuse. While in a meditative state, it also helps to perceive yourself as "empty" and separate from any thoughts, which I call perceptual eruptions, that may be popping-up.
Many classes are available that teach various meditative approaches to facilitate the resolution of trauma. "Mindful stress reduction techniques" are one of them.
These types of meditative and mind-body methods are prescribed to some abuse and trauma survivors to enable them to cultivate healthier outlooks and to stimulate a new perspective of empowerment. Studies suggest that trauma survivors participating in such "mindfulness" programs are able to sleep more soundly and reduce anxiety, lethargy and the occurrence of negative moods.
Another alternative: While meditating, you can also use an approach which is more "whisper" than "silence." This approach helps us to "get" that we really are separate from our thoughts; we are not fused with them or identical to them.
Like pimples or warts, they are simply eruptions. I call them "perceptual eruptions."
Some of them are more functional, others are more neurotic or flawed and we must evaluate and choose the most functional for our use. Using "whisper mindfulness," during meditation or not, you purposely practice detaching, observing, assessing, then selecting the thoughts you will run with.
In this way, you ally with yourself in actively enhancing the quality of your mental and thinking life. Unfortunately, thinking is habitual and we have been conditioned to think that we Are our thoughts, and regardless of their irrationality, they Must represent reality.
However, using "whisper mindfulness," while meditating or not, you can "get" that you are cognitively "empty" and really separate from the diseased perceptual eruptions produced by trauma and abuse that most people call "negative thoughts."
