Using Hydraulic Oils

The property value of liquids in the engineering science of mechanics is the foundation of hydraulics

. Fluid power is responsible for the production, manageability and the broadcast of the energy and power with the use of pressurized liquids. The science and application of hydraulics and hydraulic oil is millennia old dating back to ancient civilizations.

Some of the earliest forms of hydraulics include the water power such as the Roman Aqueduct System and the Ancient Egyptian Irrigation System. In ancient Sri Lanka, China used waterwheels in order to power the water valves and the furnace bellows. These are just a couple of examples of how free surface hydraulics were used. Free flowing bodies of water, such as lakes and rivers, were used. The open channel flow is actually on offshoot of this application as it also uses open channels of water, such as the open oceans.

There were more inventions within the difficult hydraulics field throughout the Middle East. The water powered clockworks and even the automatic machinery were introduced there. Ibn Bassal gave everyone the mechanical flywheel back in the 11th century B.C.E. This allowed for more regulation in the actual flow of the water and the delivery of the power through all of the machines. The modern era hydraulics is actually based on the book "On the Measurement of Running Waters", which is from the 17th century. Within the same century, Pascal had introduced the hydrostatics and the hydrodynamics through the invention of the hydraulic press.

The hydraulic fluids that are in wide use are mineral oil and water based. You will "see" them in use daily within the brake, power steering and transmission systems on your car. In a commercial sense these fluids are used in heavy machinery, commercial trucks and aircraft flight control systems. Each type of hydraulic fluid has its own specific application and property to enhance the machinery's performance and even save your company money while operating.

For example, there is a medium that is used for the control and the transfer, which will have a low compressibility and low volatility. There are also mediums for heat transfer, which will have thermal capacities and lubricants that will have different levels of fluidity, stability and viscosity. The ancient base stock was simply water while the modern day stock might include esters, glycols, and silicone.

Currently companies are using hydraulic oils that protect machinery from rust, oxidation, and are equipped with anti-foam properties within paraffinic based stocks. Without these measurements in place the mechanical equipment would often break down, rust in the extreme temperatures and possible seize up if the wrong fluid is used. In hydraulic fluids that allow for a high rate of air release the machinery flows better.

There are hydraulic fluids that will contain a detergent, which is mostly used for occasions that will call for the machinery to be subjected to a lot of abrasive particles, dust or water. When your machinery is subjected to severe conditions, you are going to want to make sure that you are using the right hydraulic oil. Remember, there are bio-friendly fluids that will work just as well for you as the chemically based ones so there is no reason to fear giving them a try.

When you have the best hydraulic oils combined with the right hydraulic equipment, you will find that you will be able to prevent premature failure to your systems and equipment damage. You will also not have to worry about a build up of sludge or corrosion. You will be able to earn a higher revenue as well.
