Visiting The Denver Museum Of Nature & Science
The Brazilian Amazon and its people are depicted in this photo exhibit by fine art photographer Tory Read
. More than 30 black-and-white images tell the documentary story of a journey down the river, and eight large-format color pinhole images convey a dreamlike impression of life along the river.
The exhibit explores the natural environment, human society and culture on the Amazon, and the interaction between North Americans and the river's people. A pair of ancient wooden boxes contains a treasure trove of information.
Two women, wrapped in linen and enclosed in painted coffins, hold the secrets of 3,000 years. Their mysteries are revealed through the magic of modern technology.
Museum scientists collaborated with doctors at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to take a look inside these two mummies using X rays and CT scans. Tomb artifacts, animal mummies, a model of an Egyptian temple, and model replicas of one of the women's skulls are found throughout the exhibition.
In Coors Mineral Hall, visitors can follow the mine shaft into a Mexican silver mine, where a cavern glistens with milky white gypsum crystals and stalactites.
They can then enter into Colorado's own Sweet Home Mine to discover a six-foot wall of blood-red rhodochrosite crystals.
Colorado was founded on mining, and in the historical mining section you'll see more local finds, like Tom's Baby, an eight-pound nugget of crystallized gold unearthed in Breckenridge in 1887. Visitors will also uncover Brazilian topaz, California watermelon tourmaline, Australian opals, intense blue azurite, green malachite, four-inch zeolite needle sprays from India, and hundreds of other dazzling specimens from around the world.
Hands-on activities and videos help young explorers learn about mineral characteristics and how minerals form. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is home to the largest collection of gem carvings outside of Moscow by Russian expatriate Vasily Konovalenko.
The intricately detailed carvings, capturing scenes from Russian folk life, are composed from an extensive palette of colorful gemstone materials. Sixteen of Konovalenko's sculptures are on exhibit at the Museum.
Visitors can also travel through time, starting 3.5 billion years ago. The journey begins beneath ancient seas.
Life diversifies as you move through the millennia, surrounded by fearsome fish and waving sea lilies. Once you're out of the water, the air is filled with huge dragonflies, foot-long centipedes, and dinosaurs.
About 75 percent of the fossils that have been on display, or are currently on display at the Museum, have come through the lab. More than 125 men and women work in the lab, donating their time and passion 364 days out of the year.
From Alaska to Argentina, Africa to Australia, more than 90 wildlife and habitat scenes illustrate our planet's amazing diversity. Like three-dimensional "postcards" from places near and far, they capture moments in time, showcasing the world's wondrous animals and the delicate ecosystems in which they live.
Artist Kent Pendleton, who painted diorama backgrounds for the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, often hid tiny elves in his work. A few are visible throughout the Museum.
In the Expedition Health gallery, visitors will experience highly-interactive, highly-personalized activities, and will immerse themselves in a theater experience that will engage all of their senses. Visitors can look at microscopic cells from their own bodies in a laboratory, participate in live demonstrations and programs, and meet new "buddies" who will help them learn about their health.
Among North America's native peoples, the rich diversity in traditional and modern ways of life reflects the distinctive regional influences of environment and materials. Shelter, food, clothing, transportation, tools-all are basic human needs satisfied in different ways by different cultures.
As you travel through the various regions you can explore authentic reconstructed dwellings, including an Eskimo snow house, a Northwest Coast clan house, a Navajo Hogan, and a Cheyenne tipi. Along the way, you can also examine beautifully crafted weavings, basketry, beadwork, and pottery.
Stop to listen to stories and watch videos on the major cultural groups. As you emerge from an entry corridor with views of space, a dramatic Martian canyon awaits you.
Dust and gas swirl in giant nebulae, and the universe is yours to explore-and where space news headlines are brought to life.
