Vocabulary improvement is not only a goal of learners of English as a Second Language in today's world. It has become an essential objective of any person who wants to succeed whether in his personal career or in a business venture. Research scientist Johnson O' Connor concluded that "an extensive knowledge of the exact meanings of English words accompanies outstanding success in this country more often than any other single characteristic we have been able to isolate and measure" (2008, para.1)*. This supports the long accepted fact that people with great communication skills have always stood out in any kind of field and having excellent English communication skills requires a vast vocabulary.

How fast you improve your vocabulary depends on a lot of factors. Some of these are 1. Health - dyslexic persons are slower learners so vocabulary improvement may also be slower, 2.Technology - if you have access to software which helps build vocabulary then you have better chances of improvement at a much faster rate and, 3. Motivation - your drive to build a better vocabulary will affect your dedication and commitment to improve and build your word knowledge and understanding. These are just some of the factors that may affect how fast you can boost your word usage knowledge. Go ahead and assess yourself and your environment on what can help or hinder you from building a better vocabulary.

Then, take the first easy steps now towards improvement. Here are 5 simple strategies you can do:

1.Read far and wide. Expand the types of print or online articles and topics that you read about. Don't limit yourself to entertainment news only or status posts in Facebook but give some attention and time too to global news, health topics and other extensive niches.

2.Use the dictionary and thesaurus. In today's world, it's easy to have access to a dictionary or thesaurus already. These references are not only available through print media but also through the internet and these come in old time favorite versions too like Merriam Webster. If you read an unfamiliar word or one with a vague meaning to you, pick up the handy dictionary and also compare its synonyms through the thesaurus. You may also find the meaning of the word through context clues or its surrounding words.

3.Use your eyes and ears. However, not all people are into reading, if you're this type then you may increase your word list by watching TV and movies. The dialogues and words in these media are chosen carefully so the message the show wants to say will come across clearly to its audience. While watching, be alert to catch unfamiliar words and going back to the basics, pick up your handy dictionary and thesaurus and look up the meaning and synonym or even antonym of the new word.

4.Speak up every day. Application will need to have its place after this. Make sure to use your newly learned words in your daily conversations or if you're into writing then use it in your articles. But keep in mind, the need to incorporate proper grammar in doing so.

5.Play Word Games. In any kind of venture, especially education, it's easier when you have fun. Whenever you can play word games like scrabble, boggle, and text twist. There are still a lot out there especially online. Playing word games exercises your familiarity with word spelling and meaning, as well tracks how fast you can think of a word.
