Walking In Spain: Exploring The North East Region

While the north-eastern region of Spain is close to the border with France

, it does not detract from the distinct character of some of the areas you can visit here while on a holiday walking in Spain. Indeed, many a happy walking holiday can be spent here once you know the highlights of the region and what it has to offer.

Here we focus in on some of the areas you can explore while walking in Spain.

Navarre

This is an area that shares the left hand portion of the border with France. It is a community that dates back to pre-Roman times. One of the highlights is the Castle of Xabier, which can be found in Javier, a town in Navarre. The area is also famous for its contribution to the Pyrenees Mountains and its ability to offer up everything from mountains to flat land and everything in between. In short, it is a classic area for walkers.

La Rioja

The province of La Rioja is well worth a visit on a holiday involving walking in Spain. This is a mountainous area that has plenty to offer for eager hikers, and nature and history buffs. Try a walk to the Monastery of Santa Maria la Real of Najera, or visit Logrono, the biggest city in the region. The city is also where Rioja wine eagerly swaps hands, although do note that the wine is not the only reason to visit! Make sure you dont miss Carmen Park or the Parque del Ebro either.

Aragon

Aragon is another delightful community in the north-east. Undertaking a charming walk to Loarre, a castle dating from Roman times, is just one of the many things you can do here. Aragon is one of the most appealing parts of this area of the country for walkers to visit, mainly because few people live in the area in comparison to its size. Make sure you dont miss the chance to do some guided walks in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park.

Catalonia

This is perhaps the most famous area in the whole of the north-eastern region. Walking in Spain takes on a whole new meaning when you do it here. For starters there are plenty of UNESCO World Heritage Sites to visit and explore, perhaps most notably for keen walkers is the Park Guell in Barcelona. The entrance to the park offers amazing views over both the park itself and the areas beyond. Tossa de Mar is another area worth visiting for its amazing views and picturesque landscape.

The north-east of the country has a huge diversity to offer and whether its your first time here or you simply want to explore some areas of the country you may not have visited before, this is the ideal place to do it.
