There are several instances when John Bloom thinks he might go mad with the tweets of crickets in his head

At other times, it is quite similar to bleats from an electronic gadget. Funnier still is when it sounds something like a constant hissing sound.
The inner ears of this 51 year old man from California are affected by tinnitus, which creates a constant sensation of ?ringing in the ear? and making life miserable for him. Every day is a terrible experience for him.
This disorder results in a gradual and irreversible hearing loss caused by frequent exposure to loud noises whether at home or at the workplace or even during recreational activities. Tinnitus is the result of ageing, besides other factors.
Data currently available with the American Tinnitus Association indicates that over 50 million Americans have been affected by tinnitus, either sometime or permanently. While about 2 million people are completely disabled because of tinnitus, 12 million more are in a fairly bad shape because of it.
Bloom happens to be one of those unfortunate ones who can no longer hear. In his case, tinnitus is both maddening and devastating at the same time.
Two years ago he attended a rock concert and that seems to be where tinnitus began in his case.
For reasons best known to him, Bloom says he does not want to name the venue or the event, but he is able to confirm that it was certainly the very day that his life started getting miserable. He did wear foam ear plugs throughout the concert.With loud music playing, he attempted adjusting one of the earplugs, but a blast of music that hit his unguarded ear at the same instant seems to have caused the permanent damage.
The first symptoms that showed up were a very bothersome earache coupled with sensitivity to all kinds of noises.
Then came a phase when he could hear an incessant noise in the background. Doctors did not take more than a few days to confirm that he had tinnitus.
His doctor told him what the ear, nose and throat specialist was to tell him later, that tinnitus just isn't curable. Patients do take medication that reduces the intensity of ringing in the ear, but ultimately they have no option but to cope with the unfortunate situation they find themselves in.
Most tinnitus patients can go crazy because of the noise they seem to hear and the stress as a result of it, but sleeping pills and antidepressants reduce the level of their suffering to a great extent. Bloom probably thinks natural remedies are safer.
He trusts zinc, magnesium and Vitamin B12 supplements will make him feel a lot better, and he also takes melatonin for getting some much needed sleep.
Many therapies try to fool the brain into believing that there is no tinnitus at all.
Neuromonics is the science of deploying electronics to create a low-volume white sound that seamlessly blots out the deafening noises. Proper and timely treatment leaves tinnitus patients slightly better off, but the numbers are ever increasing.
Tinnitus can never be cured completely or so it seems at the current level of medical advancement.
