Week 7:Farve's Return to Green Bay 2. New England vs San Diego. The Rest
The Minnesota and Green Bay wasn't a great game, but it was the most dramatic. Brett Farve played like he has his entire twenty year career. He plays like a roller coaster who has had a couple of beers. He makes throws that make you wonder "What are you thinking?" Then he makes other throws that make you say, "How did he complete that pass?" No one was surprised he threw three interceptions. No one was surprised he led the Vikings down the field at the end of the game. He had Packer fans painfully twisting on the edge of their seats who have seen his act so many times. He had the nation riveted to their televisions. Farve is never boring. That is why people love him and hate him.
The fact he came up short is neither here nor there. He put the Vikings in a position to win. It's too bad his head coach Brad Childress threw him under the proverbial bus during his post game news conference. "The quarterback has got to play within the system and not turn the ball over." Really coach? Farve knows this. Farve is not some rookie quarterback who doesn't know any better. Farve doesn't throw interceptions on purpose. He's trying to win. That's what he does, that's what he's been doing his entire career. That is why you sent three of his best friends on the team during training camp to beg him to come back for one more year. That's the same guy who with his play last year earned you a contract extension after last year. Where have you been coach Childress? In a coma for last couple of decades?
It was unrealistic to have expected Farve to have another year like he did last year. Thirty touchdowns and seven interceptions. That was Farve's best statistical year ever. He's a year older, he's already beat up physically and not to mention he's got other issues to deal with. But Farve still gives the Vikings the best chance to win the division, and since there is no dominant team in the NFC a chance for the Super Bowl. Childress owes Farve an apology. He is going to need him.
New England beating San Diego. New England played its worse game of the year and still won. They couldn't score more points when they got great field position off turnovers. They gave up all kinds of yards. Belichick makes his second bonehead decision of his career. They won because they played the San Diego Chargers, who seem to amaze their fans with creative ways to self implode on weekly basis.
The Chargers fumbled the ball when the receiver put the ball down on ground thinking the play was like in college. A running back doesn't know that a backward pass is a live ball and made no effort to retrieve it. And of course the costly penalties, none bigger than the illegal procedure on the Charger drive. The penalty forced a makeable 45 yard field goal to a more difficult 50 yard field goal. I was not surprised he missed it. It was only more torture for Charger fans when it hit the goal post.
This is a year where everything that could have gone wrong has for the Chargers. It started in the offseason when the Chargers let LT and Antonio Cromartie go. They played hard ball with two key free agents Marcus McNeal and Vincent Jackson. They've had numerous and costly turnovers, probably the worse special teams in league history and now they have injuries to Antonio Gates and Malcom Floyd. One more key injury and its curtain time. The worst part is that it could even get worse. The Chargers could be playing in Los Angeles next year.
The Rest.
Kansas City over Jacksonville. The Chiefs keep making big plays when they need them. Of course it doesn't hurt that you are playing a team whose starting quarterback was working at Applebee's last week.
Tennessee over Phildelphia. The Titan's Kenny Britt played like a young T.O. The Eagles secondary played like the invisible men. Tough weekend to be a Philadelphia sports fan.
Atlanta over Cincinnati. Roddy White was unbelievable yesterday. He made it rain over Adam Jones all day long.
Pittsburgh over Miami. The Steelers got screwed when Roethilsberger recovered his own fumble in the end zone. The Zapruder film confirmed it. Is Dolphin coach Tony Saprano trying audition for the new Top Gun remake by wearing sunglasses all the time, even at night?
Washington over Chicago. DeAngelo Hall earned a game ball and trip to the pro bowl with four interceptions. Jay Cutler is going to need a lawyer because should sue his offensive coordinator for letting him get beaten like a pinyadda all season.
Carolina over San Francisco. I knew the Panthers would not go winless this was there cup cake game. Perhaps getting away to London would be just the thing to unite the 49ers. Or maybe they will cause an international incident with all of Singletary's shouting.
Tampa Bay over St. Louis. Gut check win by Tampa Bay. Coach Morris might not be wrong when he says Bucs are the best team in the NFC. Rams let that win get away like they have the entire decade.
Baltimore over Buffalo. I know a win is a win in the NFL, but allowing 34 points to the Bills can't be good for your confidence. Ryan Fitzpatrick has played himself into an alternate, alternate, alternate, alternate for the pro bowl.
Cleveland over New Orleans. David Bowens had dream game for any defensive player let alone a defensive tackle. The Saints and Drew Brees played like the Archie Manning Saints of the 70's.
Seattle over Arizona. Pete Carroll does know how to coach. The Seahawks are in first place. It doesn't hurt that they beat the Cardinals. Did the Cardinals really make and almost win the Super Bowl two years ago?
Oakland over Denver. The Raiders played their best game ever. A certain Pac 10 coach across the bay would have tried to score a hundred. I don't know what is worse for the Broncos, giving up 59 points to the Raiders or having them begin to take a knee in the third quarter.
