First take a look at trying to determine what is the weight culprits. Its not just counting calories either. It's the types of foods and when they are eaten that are important as well. It's not just how active an individual is, but what type of activity they are involved in.

The other issue that is very important is that new dieters have to realize that they did not put these pounds on over night and they are not going to lose them overnight.

If beginner dieters start their weight loss program with the proper mindset they will be far more successful.

Step #1:

Learn the basics about food. Set yourself up your own little mini course and learn which foods contain the unhealthy fats and the highest calories. Then you at least have some knowledge to begin with.

Ste #2:

Once you have learned what the healthy foods are start replacing the bad foods with the good foods a little at a time. Making the transition into dieting will bring you greater results.

Step #3:

Look at your current activities. If you don't do anything in the day that gives you a cardio workout then research some exercises that are convenient for you that will help you do this. No matter how active you are in the day if it isn't making your metabolism work then you are not going to burn fat.

Once you have put these three steps into place then chances are you are either not gaining any more weight at least or you may have even started to lose. Now you are ready to look at some good weight loss programs that appeal to you and that you feel that you can stick with.
