If classes are offered online, this may include a current computer and a fast Internet connection. This can be a challenge for some adult learners who may be unfamiliar with the technological expectations of education today. What adults learners do not want to do is try to "get by" with older technology like they would a used textbook. Granted, going out and buying all new stuff may not be necessarily either, but they should at least be aware of what they need so that they do not spend a lot of frustrating energy on maintenance and technical support problems.

Drive and discipline

Another issue of preparation is the fact that distance education can require a level of dedication that is actually more than "traditional" education. When students are in an online setting or a situation where they commute to satellite campus, they may not have class as often as people who attend residential schools. This may require the adult student to actually be more motivated, as there may not be a defined structure in place that causes them to do their work. When people take online classes, they can be under the impression that the class will be easier because they do not have to "attend" class and they can do the work on their own time. Finally, adult learners should prepare for distance learning by networking with other people. This can include fellow students or the instructor who is facilitating. Distance education may be more convenient in some regards, but it can also be a very lonely experience if people do not stay connected. Therefore, the adult education student should do their best to connect with as many people as possible in a short period of time. That way, they can have a group of people who can serve as resources if they have challenges along the way.
