What Makes Laser Liposuction Unique?

Although we typically speak of liposuction as a procedure

, it is perhaps more accurate to describe it as a class of procedures. Since liposuction was invented in the late 70's, a large number of variations have arisen. There are a number of different techniques and pieces of equipment that doctors can use to assist them as they work to surgically remove excess fat from the body.

One method that has come about within the last decade is called laser lipolysis (also known as laser assisted liposuction or LAL for short). This technique uses surgical lasers to melt fat, which makes it easier to suction the fat out.

All forms of liposuction use special hollow tubes called cannulas to help suction out the fat. These cannulas are inserted through incisions in the skin and moved back and forth through the fatty tissues of the target area. The cannulas are attached to a high powered vacuum, and so while the cannula is moved back and forth, it both breaks up and vacuums out the fat.

Because of the laser technology used in LAL, the cannula doesn't have to do as much work in breaking up the fat. This makes the procedure less invasive, less traumatic, and easier to recover from. The laser also makes it possible for the cannula used in laser liposuction to be much smaller. This means that the incisions can be much smaller, also, often measuring only millimeters across. This means easier healing, and a smaller chance of visible scarring.

Another advantage of laser lipolysis is that some reports suggest that it can help to tighten skin. One of the common problems that people have after a liposuction is that problems of loose or saggy skin can be exacerbated. Some sources suggest that the heat caused by the laser helps to seal blood vessels, causing collagen production, which in turn helps to tighten the skin.

Because of its smaller cannulas, laser lipolysis can be very good at targeting difficult areas that require tight control and finesse, such as the neck or face. Because the lasers can help to break down the fatty tissue, it can be helpful in treating fibrous areas such as the love handles or the fat of the male breast.

However, some surgeons and patients are finding that LAL isn't quite as effective at targeting large amounts of fat, so people who are looking to remove more significant amounts of weight may find that they are best served by other methods.

Because of the cutting edge technology involved, LAL can also be significantly more expensive than some other forms of liposuction.
