Self defense products have been an effective tool for law enforcement officers and military units for decades. Their origins go back literally thousands of years ago. Only within the last 10 to 15 years have self defense products made the successful transition to the civilian community.
When companies such as Stun Master, Taser International and Mace brand saw the high levels of success in commercial use with law enforcement they made of conscious decision to make their products more user-friendly to appeal to the civilian community.
All self defense products provide a nonlethal alternative to the deadly force of a handgun and as such are extremely successful in providing a front line of self defense for anyone who uses them. They immobilize an assailant for a temporary period of time to allow for escape to a safer environment.
All self defense products do that. But they do it in different ways. Not every self defense product is perfect for every situation but they can form an effective piece of your self defense strategy.
Here's how they work and here's why they are so effective.
Pepper sprays use a byproduct of one of the hottest peppers in the world-the cayenne pepper. It is called oleoresin capsicum or some people call it OC. When it makes contact with the skin of an assailant it causes an intense burning sensation. It is unlike any thing else you can imagine. It also causes coughing, choking and shortness of breath. The effects can last as long as 45 minutes.
Tasers technically are a stun gun but I refer to them as stun guns on steroids. They use new electro-muscular disruption (EMD) technology that disables an assailant by overriding the central nervous system. Two electrified probes travel up to 15 feet to make this happen. In independent tests they have been shown to be nearly 100 percent effective.
Unlike tasers regular stun guns use high-voltage and low amperage to disable an attacker for 5 to 10 minutes. The electrical charge causes the muscles to work very rapidly depleting all the blood sugars in the assailant's body so he has no energy left to do anything.
Pepper sprays and stun guns are relatively inexpensive, costing no more than about $90 at the very most. You can get a good pepper spray for as little as $10. Tasers are more expensive, with prices starting at about $370 and up.
