What Next For Domestic Renewable Energy?
As the rates for the feed-in-tariff come down interest in solar PV is declining but
still 99% of the domestic energy generation systems fitted to date have been solar PV. This certainly doesnt mean that the boom for domestic renewable energy is over.. While Solar PV may have had its day there are still great returns that can be made on south facing sunny roofs, especially if you shop around to get a good deal on the solar panels.
Most other mainstream renewable technologies focus on producing or saving heat, which given that a typical home uses up to two thirds of its energy on space heating and around a quarter on water heating, this does account for the lions share of the average energy bill. Despite the delays in implementing the Renewable Heat Incentive, the stop-gap Renewable Heat Premium Payment does make many of the heat generating technologies viable; fitting solar panels for solar hot water works well in sunny places, air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps are gaining popularity and credibility, and biomass (wood burning stoves and wood burners) are now being seen as viable alternatives to oil or Bulk LPG. Looking forward, the Green Deal, the flagship policy from the government, is going to be implemented in the autumn. It is designed to fund the uptake of many of these technologies through a finance agreement that is paid back through savings on your energy bill. A visit from a Green Deal Advisor will confirm which technologies will be suitable. The Green Deal Advisor will list the solutions and the saving possible will be clear; this is expected to favour wall insulation solutions, particularly solid wall insulation as there has not been any large scale government policy focusing here to date.
The Green Deal will cover over 40 technologies; from simple measures like draught proofing, through to the more sophisticated energy saving solutions such as solid wall insulation, and it will also include heat generation technologies covered by other schemes like biomass and air source heat pumps. Hopefully home owners can take a more holistic approach to energy saving: Fitting combined solutions, such as heat saving technologies for example solid wall insulation, with heat generating technologies like heat pumps or wood burners, with electricity generating solutions such as solar panels. There has been concern about the Green Deal, not being a subsidy or a grant, but a commercial finance arrangement subject to commercial rates, currently set at 7%. Despite these concerns there should be opportunities for home owners to focus on making their homes more energy efficient without taking on personal debt; the finance is taken against the energy bill. The Golden Rule is that the cost of the Green Deal solution, including financing, cannot exceed the savings.
