What Products Are There For Protecting Your Business During Winter?

During the winter as temperatures drop we may find that we have to take extra care both driving in our cars and walking on the pavement

. The ice can make roads and pathways slippery and many people have suffered injuries such as twisted ankles and broken bones as they fall on the ice. Snow is also a major hazard as it can get compacted by people walking on it or cars driving on it making it as treacherous as ice. For cars in particular the snow can become dirty and take on the colour of the road, creating an invisible hazard.

Whilst it is the local authority and councils responsibility to ensure our roads are clear private business premises are the responsibility of the businesses and companies owning them. You have a responsibility to ensure any service roads, car parks and walkways are clear of any dangers to your workers and visitors. With the possibility of accident claims being made against your company it is in your best interests to ensure your property is safe and that you take appropriate measures.

Grit bins

You will often see the polythene bins in supermarket car parks, on the streets and at other businesses and they are ideal for storing the salt for when you need it. Many models can be fitted with a padlock to prevent people stealing your salt supplies; rock salt is one of the most commonly used materials that help to melt ice by altering the melting point of the ice and snow.

Salt Spreaders

Some businesses may have spread salt by hand or by using a shovel but this can be a time consuming process, salt spreading equipment act in a similar way to the grit trucks that we see on the motorway and main roads but in a much smaller scale. They are similar to divides you use to spread fertilizer or lawn feed by walking along the device will spread the salt across a wide area for you.

Safety Signs

Sometimes ice can be hard to see, especially during early hours or at night, you should have at the very least temporary safety signs informing motorists or pedestrians to take care of the ice on pathways and car parks, some more advanced permanent signs are temperature sensitive so they only show their warning message if the temperature drops below freezing point.

Snow Plough/Shovels

If we were to get a significant coating of snow again then rock salt isnt going to have much effect when there are a few feet of snow on the ground. There are snow shovels that can make clearing pathways or car parks much easier and less time consuming, or snow ploughs that can be operated by a single person to help clear the way.
