What Stands Between You and Your Dream Law School? The LSAT

What Stands Between You and Your Dream Law School

? The LSAT

Your favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird, you love courtroom drama-based TV shows, and Legally Blonde is one of your top comedies. Influenced by it all, now you want to go to law school. The only thing that stands between you and you newly chosen career is the Law School Admission Test.

Along with your academic record and extra-curricular activities, the LSAT is an important component of law school admission. Because students with varied majors ranging from Math, sciences and humanities apply to law schools, admission boards often do not have a bright-line test in determining how the majors stack up against each other. Thus, the LSAT score the only standardized numerical indicator becomes important in evaluating law school applicants.

LSAT is a test unlike any other standardized exam you have taken before. While an exam such as the SAT tests math and reading skills, the LSAT attempts to quantify logical and analytical reasoning. The LSAT is divided into questions testing Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension:

Arguments (Logical Reasoning) section gives thirty-five (35) minutes for approximately twenty-five (25) questions. The Logical Reasoning section asks you to evaluate arguments, find the main points, the strength and weaknesses, and conceptual foundations of the arguments.

Games (Analytical Reasoning) section consists of one (1) section. You have thirty-five (35) minutes for approximately twenty-five (25) questions. This section asks you to answer questions to games such as, if six monuments were built in six consecutive years, and A and D were built in the third year, which of the remaining monuments were built in the first and last years, or if company A owns planes number 1 and 2, and company B owns planes number 3, 4, 5, and on Sundays each plane makes exactly one flight, based on certain conditions, what is the order in which the five planes depart the airport.

Reading Comprehension section tests your ability to read, digest and synthesize complex passages. This section asks you to conclude the main points of the passages, whether concepts are true or false based on your understanding of the passages or what inferences can be drawn. You must complete approximately twenty-five (25) reading comprehension questions in thirty-five (35) minutes.

Essay section provides a particular topic and you are allowed thirty-five (35) minutes to write the essay. The writing section tests your reasoning, clarity, organization, language usage, and writing mechanics. Although the essay section is not scored, it is forwarded to prospective law schools.

How to Prepare for the LSAT

The LSAT does not test content, that is, what you have learned throughout your academic career leading up to the test day. Rather, it tests your logical and analytical reasoning skills, as well as your speed. There is not much to "study" for. However, one of the best ways to prepare for the LSAT is taking actual LSATs previously administered by the Law School Admission Council. By understanding the format, and the pattern in each type of question, you will be a more efficient test-taker. The more you practice with real LSATs, the more you improve your chances of scoring high.
