What To Look For When Buying A Digital Camera?

Looking for a digital camera can be a difficult and confusing process

, especially if you aren't someone who knows a lot about technology. There are quite a few different numbers that you have to deal with which can easily become jumbled. Let's take a look at some of the basics of choosing a digital camera. In this article we're going to assume that you're looking for a point-and-shoot camera, as DSLR cameras have some different factors that you should take into consideration, but they are quite expensive cameras.

One of the numbers that you will see a lot is megapixels. Megapixels are the measure of the resolution that your camera gets - think of it as how "big" your picture will be. It should not be confused with [though it commonly is] the quality of a picture. Actual picture quality is affected by a number of different things, such as quality of the light sensor, size of the lens, quality of the camera's software, etc. Because of the limitations of the size of the lens, you realistically don't need more than 8 to 10 MP in a point-and-shoot camera, though many of them have 12 to 14 or even more. When you enlarge a photo to full size, you will often find that it is blurry - there is no real advantage to having lots of megapixels.

Zoom is an important factor to consider. Most digital cameras have anywhere from a 3x to a 5x optical zoom. [Digital zoom lowers picture quality, so it's not worth considering.] For the purposes of general picture taking, this will be fine. If you want to get a little sophisticated, you can find cameras which have a 10x zoom or even more.

Most cameras store photos on an SD memory card. These are the industry standard and are by far the most common. You may wish to avoid cameras which use proprietary memory standards as finding memory cards for them is harder.

Digital cameras come with loads of built in features and different settings. IN general these don't matter too much, but it is worth seeing if there is a feature that you particularly want, like the ability to take panoramic photos or a setting for a particular lighting condition. These may make one camera better for you than another similar camera.

These factors should be enough to help you figure out what digital camera is right for you, but there are many more settings, specifications, and numbers that can be taken into account when comparing digital cameras. One great way to really find out how good a camera is is to look up reviews of it online and see what other people have to say about a camera. Ultimately, you want your camera to work for you - so testing them out in stores and looking up reviews is the best measure of how good a camera is.
