Medical Triggers
Prescription medicines can sometimes cause panic attacks. It is always worth reading the label and information leaflet in case this is a known side effect. If you believe that a prescribed drug is to blame then it is best to mention it to your doctor. There may be an alternative that you can take. Hormonal and nutrient imbalance, such as hypogyclemia and hypothyroidism are also known to cause anxiety and panic symptoms.
Mental Triggers
Sometimes past trauma can cause a panic or anxiety reaction. A reminder of something stressful that happened previously might provoke an attack. Sometimes the fear of having another panic attack is what triggers further episodes. This can result in a vicious circle. Certain situations can develop negative thought associations, the thoughts themselves result in further panic, and so on. One thing to keep in mind, it is the thoughts themselves that are causing the reaction and not the actual situation. One way to break this cycle is to seperate the negative thought from the actual physical event.
Emotional Triggers
Similar to mental triggers, emotions can instigate unrestrained panic reaction. Sadness, perhaps linked to a negative memory, might generate an irrational outcome. Or possibly a person is not comfortable with feelings of anger and this results in full-blown panic attack.
Succesful panic attack treatment is often dependant upon breaking the link between the trigger event and the irrational reaction. This can stop the vicious cycle of fear and negative thinking inducing further anxiety.
