In fact, a liquid crystal display is created when certain types of substances are in a position, known as a phase, between being solid and being liquid and the molecules will be in some sort of order as they would in a solid, but are not in a specific position, so are like a liquid.

It gets a lot more complicated after this, but that's probably as far as most people want to go, other than knowing that liquid crystal displays consist of a thin layer of this liquid' between two sheets of glass or other transparent material.

The advantage for laptops is that LCD laptop screens can be much thinner and lighter than the screens on old style monitors. Without LCD laptop screens, laptops would not be as slender and lightweight as they are these days.
