What is Magnesium Migraine?

Magnesium migraine is as simple term that connotes magnesium and calcium imbalance in the body as possible triggers for migraines.

Magnesium is an alkaline mineral found in leafy vegetables such as broccoli. Almonds and fruits like banana and avocadoes are also very rich in magnesium content. The role of magnesium is to aid metabolism of carbohydrates and fats in the body. Calcium is equally important as it makes the bones and teeth stronger and less prone to breakage. Foods rich in calcium include milk and milk products. Both minerals are also important for the brain. Calcium in the blood vessels helps it to contract while magnesium does the opposite. If a person has a magnesium-calcium imbalance of the body, these blood vessels may exhibit unnatural dilation or contraction at varying intervals. This in turn will significantly affect the blood flow around the brain. The result is a magnesium migraine episode.

Some magnesium migraine sufferers experience pounding headaches as a result of the irregular blood flow in the brain. Others may have other symptoms such as vomiting and blurriness. Typical migraine events may last from 30 minutes, sometimes longer than two consecutive days. Generally, women experience more migraine attacks than men. Migraine may occur at any age but most people have them during their 20's to 30's. It was found the migraine frequency decreases with age for both genders.

There are two types of magnesium migraine. One is called with aura and the other is without aura. Aura refers to short-interval visual disturbances at the onset of migraine. These may come in a form of small, enlarging blind spot or temporary blindness in one or both of the eyes. The advantage of aura is that it allows the person to have an advance warning prior to headache pains. The downside is that the aura may pose as a threat to the person's safety. Imagine if the person experiences a magnesium migraine with aura while standing on a ladder rung or even simply walking in a busy street. Chances are that the person may risk hazard unto himself or to others around him.

Taking magnesium in excessive amounts can cause diarrhea while too much of calcium in the body may weaken the bones and teeth. To prevent magnesium migraine, an average person should take not more than 420mg of magnesium daily. This may come in the form of foods as mentioned or maybe from taking mineral supplements. Be aware however, that some supplements have side effects such as liver deterioration. Ask first to a health professional before taking in vitamins and minerals supplements.

On the other hand, magnesium deficiency may be caused by wines, alcohols and caffeine. As such, magnesium migraine can be prevented by maintaining a healthy balance of magnesium and calcium in the body. This may seem as a formidable task. But the simplest step starts with ensuring that the person stays away as much as possible from potential sources of magnesium loss in the body. Eating right and fit lifestyle will also improve the chances of preventing migraines.
