Therefore, consider conservative colors such as black, gray and navy to appear more of a commanding chaperone.

Pick an outfit that fits with the formal atmosphere of the event. If the prom has a theme, make sure you consider a look that fits with the prom's premise. For example, if the prom has a 1980s theme, choose a look reminiscent of the time, but again try to retain an authoritative appearance. Refrain from wearing anything too tight or revealing. Dresses that show off cleavage or leg should be left in your closet. If teenage girls can't wear such looks to the prom, neither should you. The same is applicable for men; showing chest hair, for example, would not be appropriate.

For women, anything from a formal dress to a pantsuit will work. Remember that you have to adhere to guidelines set forth by the high school just as the teenagers do. Therefore, if the rules state that women must wear dresses, you should find an age-appropriate dress. Also, wear comfortable shoes as you will likely be on your feet all night.

For men, a casual suit will work for the occasion. No need to buy an expensive tuxedo to chaperone the event. Wearing a tie is up to you; just make sure that you wear a nice collared shirt that is buttoned up past your clavicle.

Hair and Makeup

Style your hair to fit the formality of the event, but don't outshine the teenagers. If your hair is long, it can be put up in a simple french twist. If not, blow dry your hair and style it to make it look neat and tidy. You shouldn't spend money on getting your hair done at a hair salon---find an inexpensive look that makes you look classy. In terms of makeup, try not to overindulge with too much eyeshadow, blush or mascara. Keep your makeup simple and elegant.

Men can style their hair in a way that makes them look put-together; this means taking control of any frizz or waves that give you an air of laziness. Simply blow dry your hair, and add a little hair product if needed to create a clean, classic look.
