When Am I Going To Need A Liftgate

Sometimes when you're placing orders with courier services

, you're going to be told that you need pieces of equipment due to the specialized nature of your shipment that you might not be familiar with. Many times there are special vehicles, trailers, and equipment that are unique to the courier industry. Unless you've shipped regularly in the past, you might need some clarification about what you're supposed to be paying for. One of the most common of these types of equipment is known as a liftgate, and a very large portion of shipments are going to require a liftgate. This is a special lift that is attached to the back of a semi trailer or delivery truck in order to lift and lower items from the level of the ground up to the level of the truck.

There are times when a trucking company is going to require that you hire a liftgate along with your vehicle otherwise they are going to refuse to carry your shipment. Sometimes people balk at having to pay for the extra equipment, but the union rules and laws are going to require liftgates any time that you are shipping something where the individual packages are going to weigh more than 100 lbs. The act of lifting even one package of that weight from the ground to the truck level could hurt some people, but even for those in better shape, the repetitive movement of moving packages of that weight can easily cause back strain that would lead to workers compensation claims, and so it is a hard requirement that packages over that weight require the liftgate.

There is a specific situation where a liftgate won't be required even when shipments of over the weight limit are being sent. The only time this can happen is when a loading dock is installed at both the facility where the packages are being picked up from, as well as where they are being delivered too. Because renting a liftgate from a courier company costs extra, and is much slower than unloading to a loading dock, there is a clear advantage in working from warehouses that are properly equipped. The truth is that even though a loading dock can cost a great deal of money to install, when building a new facility there are many advantages to be gained by installing a dock, just one of which is the money that you will save on renting liftgates.
