Whilst practicality is a very important word whenever it comes to the work of bathroom

and kitchen designers, individual requirements, design preferences and style are very high up on the list as well. The kitchen in the modern home today is more than just a place that we go to cook or prepare meals, it is also invariably a place where we gather, as a family unit or even when we're entertaining guests.

It's difficult to put your finger on why the kitchen is a traditional gathering place now, as in many respects it's not the most practical area. However, when we entertain we like to provide snacks and drinks for our guests and when we just get together as a family unit we often like to discuss family business whilst preparing to go our separate ways in the morning, or gathering together to eat a meal in the evening.

When you design a kitchen you need to pay attention to two areas. Firstly, you need to analyse just how you operate as a family unit and this will dictate how the room is configured. Secondly, however, you do have to bear in mind a certain amount of convention and understand that a redesign like this is intended to last a long time, will significantly affect the overall functionality and "flow" of the house in general and this should be a consideration for when it comes time to sell.

Having said that, you certainly don't have to stick with perceived convention and relegate your creative flair to the back of one of those kitchen drawers, where all the receipts and random items seem to accumulate. Part of the fun of redesigning a kitchen is, after all, to make it an even more pleasant and entertaining place to gather.

When it comes to a complete redesign it's often easier to centre your ideas around the position of the sink unit. This is the least easy to move, after all, due to the existing plumbing and waste disposal routes. You should make sure that the stove unit is not too far away from the sink area, so that you can transfer between these two places when carrying hot water without too much of a risk. You should also ensure that there is plenty of work space adjacent to the stove top, so that you don't, once again, have to be manoeuvring too much when dealing with hot food and liquids.

Make sure that you plan very carefully. Measure once then measure again. Remember that each and every storage space should be practical and usable and try and avoid running into issues whenever you get into those corners. Likewise, be careful when you're planning to put a large fridge/freezer in a corner area, as you definitely want to make sure that the doors will open and swing out of your way properly when it's all installed.
