Which Has More Omega 3, Water Or Oil Packed Tuna?
As I was going through the supermarket last week
, checking out the cans of tuna, I began to get confused again. Some of the cans of tuna on the shelves were packed in water while others were packed in oil. What was the reason behind packing them in two different ways? When I was a small child, we ate tuna packed in oil. We would open the can, squeeze as much as we could out, then hold the can under running water to try and rinse the oil off. I also remember it tasted better than the water packed we eventually started eating once family members started having cholesterol and triglyceride problems. I remember that tuna packed in oil tasted far better than the one packed in water. But we switched over to the latter, after the elders in the family started having cholesterol and triglyceride problems. I started thinking how omega 3 is found in fatty fish and fatty fish have more oil in them. So is this oil loaded with omega 3?
I bought some cans of oil based tuna to eat for lunch the next day. it reminded me of the lovely childhood taste. I read the label to check its contents. It read the same as the water packed. It contained 2 servings of omega 3 at .01 gram each. I was astonished. There was no more omega 3 in that can than the water type. How could that be?
I got on the computer and started doing some more research. I found that can tuna is a good source of omega 3. Its excellent for your health. The benefits of omega 3 seem to be non ending. Although quite many nutrients are killed in the canning process, still canned tuna can be considered to be a good source of omega 3. Freezing and fresh are still considered the best.
As per my research, I discovered that oil packed tuna was a wrong choice. Water packed tuna would have been a better option. Although its drier, I wont be washing any of the omega 3 nutrients that I am after down the drain when draining off the oil. I also learned that when they pack the tuna in oil, it blends with some of the tunas natural fat. That is why you wash some of the omega 3s off when preparing it. Tuna packed in water is also better, because tuna's natural fats do not get wasted, as water and oil do not mix with each other.
Our answer to the question, water or oil based, which contains the most omega 3s, it seems while in the can they are equal, but once the oil is drained off, omega 3 contents are no longer equal. Tuna packed in water is better for you than the one packed in oil unless its packed in olive oil. Now thats a totally different story.
