Which Is Eco-friendly - Ac Replacement Or Repair?

When the air conditioner stops working, many homeowners will have to make the decision whether it's time for AC replacement or repair

. In today's "green" culture, most of us are well aware of Earth's dwindling planetary resources. Most citizens try their best to bear this in mind when making decisions. The 3 R's of eco-friendliness are reuse, repair and recycle. To buy a new item may make the environmentally conscious cringe with guilt. But they shouldn't as sometime replacing is better for the planet that fixing an old appliance one more time. Here's why:

- Fossil fuel needed to power up the air conditioner: Some type of energy will be needed to power up air conditioning units. Usually the energy is from electricity or gas. While there are some solar devices that are able to run ACs, these are fairly modern so wouldn't be a common characteristic of an older appliance. When an old unit guzzles energy like a hungry monster, this is depleting natural resources each and every month.

- Repair bills cost the earth, too: If the repair technician has to drive his or her truck to your house every couple of months to service your machine, he or she will be using gasoline and oil to get to and fro. All of the parts and tools needed to fix your AC will have had to be delivered to his or her shop by a freighter, costing additional energy in transport costs.

- New efficient appliances: Today's Energy Star HVACs are so efficient that homeowners' utility bills drop drastically. In fact, the savings are so profound that the government awards tax credits to individuals who change over to the modern appliances. Not only will less fossil fuel be utilized by the consumer, the earth will be kept vibrant for future generations. Uncle Sam cares about future generations and this is why the tax credits are awarded. By purchasing an Energy Star AC, a homeowner is doing his or her part for the earth.

- Recycle or reuse: Just because a person decides to forgo the repair portion of the 3 R's doesn't mean he or she can't do the other 2. The old HVAC unit can be recycled for steel and parts. Some of those can be melted down or reconfigured while others can be reused to outfit another type of appliance. Two out of three R's of environmentally friendliness still help the planet be sustainable.

- Have a replacement party: When an eco-friendly homeowner decides to replace a dated old dinosaur of an air conditioner, he or she can celebrate this wise decision by hosting a "green party." Inviting friends over to your abode for an eco-friendly party can include cupcakes decorated like the earth, green tea, a personalized swap meet. The guests can each bring a used item to share as a trade with other guests. Have two rakes? Bring one and trade for someone who has a blender they never use. Celebrating community in your newly air conditioned space is a win-win.

When it comes time to make the AC replacement or repair decision, the earth-friendly decision may be to trade up. Your friends and the planet will thank you.
