Who Discovered America

Americas discovery is still controversial as there are many versions and each of them claims to be true

. Long time before Christopher Columbus landed in America, there were many expeditions to the continent.

Modern scientists suggest that Asian hunters crossed the Bering Strait on land bridges into Alaska which occurred during the last Ice Age. These early Asians travelled across North and South America where they set up communities. They are possibly the ancestors of the North and South America Indians.

America is described as a land rich with gold and silver in the ancient history book Puranas and the Indian epic Mahabharata. Early Hindu historians claim that Argentina is derived from the name Arjuna which means full of silver. A Hindu heroic character is also called Arjuna. Many people of today consider the histories in Puranas as myths. However myths also have little fact. A German scholar named Alexander von Humbolt had studied Puranas in which he came across deep information of Americas long history. The ancient Hindu Aztec Chakra and the Aztec calendar matches with each other. Ancient Eastern cultures particularly Indian were strongly influenced by the Mayans, Indians and Aztecs.

The Scots and Irish have their own version of story to tell. Irish say that a monk named St Brendan who lived between 484 and 578 AD discovered America. He had constructed monasteries in Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland. At an old age, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in search for a Promise Land. His voyage lasted for seven years and he reached the shores of North America.

Timothy Severin made a similar journey in 1977. He used early Celtic navigation tools when he sailed from Dingle, Ireland to Newfoundland, Canada. He reached there in a same manner like St. Brendan.

America was discovered by Columbus on 12th October 1942. One morning, he looked from the bow of the ship and saw land. He was sailing with his crew for ten weeks. He was searching for Spice Islands, on seeing the land he thought that he had reached East Indies. He was unaware that he was in the Bahamas but human settlements were seen on the islands.

At that time, America was not known to the Europe. Columbus might not be the first European who arrived in North America. During the same time, Vikings were venturing to the North America.

There are a number of claims till today. The Welsh, Chinese and Portuguese are joining the dispute. It seems that there is a new discovery every year. An ancient historian said that America could have been settled several thousand years ago.
