Who says there aren't any great new jobs out there? Part 2

In part one of 'Who says there aren't any great new jobs out there

?' - we laid bare the myth there are no new opportunities for job seekers. Yes of course for many people the job market is depressed and worldwide those working in the public sector face enormous uncertainty as governments seek to slash spending and reduce borrowing to balance the books. If you are fresh out of college with little experience, lacking in some of the necessary modern fundamentals such as IT skills or express a less than committed approach to new employment then yes, there's no denying that times are tough and could be getting tougher.

The fact remains however, that despite the trials and tribulations experienced by most economies of the last couple of years, if you are equipped with the appropriate skills, experience and the vision then, depending on your sector, your employment chances might actually be extremely strong.

According to employment experts the key to your future success now lies in flexibility as well strong planning, analytical and management abilities. With management, sales, training and the professions all predicted to lead the way a high level of education and training along with a commitment to lifelong learning will prove invaluable. It's not just technical or hard commercial skills that are sought. Increasingly organisations are all too aware of the absolute importance of 'soft skills', the ability to communicate effectively, to be able to negotiate and problem solve in teams. An increasingly interconnected, collaborative working environment, technologically enabled demands that people from a whole host of backgrounds can communicate clearly and get on with the business in hand.

It's not just large multi-nationals that are seeking quality staff. The global demand for a highly skilled employees is insatiable and new technology has opened the door to many small and medium size enterprises who are also now competing for talent. Employment agencies the world over are in the lookout for suitable candidates

Of course the natural law of supply and demand dictate that as competition for quality employees increases, so too, do salaries and packages.

The question is though how do you put yourself in the position of being offered the most interesting, career enhancing and best paid positions?

Raise your game it might sound a little obvious but remember those who aren't competition... aren't competition. Always look up. It's the skilled, the talented, it's the prime movers, and shakers who you need to be going head to head with. Study, read, research, train, do anything you can to strengthen your hand and offer you even the slightest advantage when it comes to the recruitment decision making process.

Network, network, network It's your responsibility to keep your ear to the ground and find out about any up and coming opportunities. It's also your responsibility to nurture your contacts, to make friends and to influence people. Use online social media tools to establish contact with people who may be of help. Attend social events and industry related seminars, meet-ups and get togethers offline. It doesn't matter how tenuous it may seem at the time this is along term game and building relationships of value takes time.

Believe in yourself As Verbal Kint may have said: "If you don't believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you?"
