Why Central Air Conditioners

Heat from the summer months sometimes make it necessary to rely on an air conditioner to help cool your home

. Before the heat gets too intense, you must decide on the type of unit you will use. There are at least two different types; portable or window units and central air conditioners. Each of these perform a different task although they both provide cool air.

You must determine the size of the area you want to cool. Most small areas such as a studio apartment or a single room can be cooled sufficiently with a portable unit. These units come in different sizes and can be used for several rooms depending on the size you choose. Larger units require your outlet to be wired for 220v while smaller ones use 110v.

Central units do not need insulating whereas one that is small and either sits in a window or a wall needs to have insulation places completely around the unit. They rarely fit the opening perfectly and unless some type of tape or insulation is used, hot air can get into the area you are trying to cool. The tape makes the unit much more efficient and prevents large electric bills.

Central units are intended to cool an entire house. They are generally attached to your existing furnace or heat pump. Used with a furnace, it operates the same way as your furnace does to heat your home. It pulls in warm air and replaces it with cool. If you have a heat pump, it pulls in the hot air and uses the heat pump to cool the air before blowing it back into the home.

Your installer much first ensure that your furnace is strong enough to support any additional work it must perform for the conditioning unit. This could mean replacing the furnace if it is old and does not allow the connection. That would mean more expense but is well worth the investment. With a new furnace as well as air unit, you are ensured that both will continue to operate in good condition.

After initial installation and purchase a central unit costs less than a portable one. Each type of air conditioner is rated according to the BTU it carries. These are British Thermal Units and the higher the BTU the more efficient they are at cooling larger areas. Most portable units are low BTU units where central air offers very high cooling.

Operating a central air conditioner will increase your electricity costs in the beginning. This is primarily because everything in your home is heated and must be cooled which also helps cool the air around it. If you are using a heat pump, the electric costs will be less. The pump actually pulls the hot air out of your home, cools it and then pumps it back into your home.

If you are cooling a large home or even a large apartment, you would benefit from using central air conditioners. They are much more efficient than portable ones and can save you money in the long term.
