When people become stressed they acquire certain habits to help them cope better
. One of those coping methods is drinking alcohol. Drinking alcohol can be very effective at helping us to forget our problems. After a few glasses of wine all our worries fade away and we feel better. However, the problem with alcohol is that it fools us. It does not make the problem of stress go away it just temporarily masks it. The thing with alcohol is that it can become addictive due to it its tranquilising affect. It is very good at numbing the pain.
When we drink too much then we feel the side effects of a hangover and vow never to drink again. However, the tranquilising effects of alcohol can become very attractive inducing you to drink more. As with any drug you need to keep taking it in ever increasing quantities to feel the same affects.
Abusing alcohol can lead to many physical and emotional health problems that can eventually ruin many peoples lives if it is not treated.
Consumption of high levels of alcohol over the long term can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. If you have a family history of high blood pressure it is advisable to limit the amount of alcohol that you consume.
Drinking alcohol excessively can also increase the levels of fat in the blood. This makes the consistency of the blood more thicker which can increase the risk of blood clots.
Many people do not realise that alcohol is high in calories. Therefore, drinking lots of alcohol can increase your body weight. If you are on a diet and trying to lose weight then you should cut down on your intake of alcohol.
Drinking too much alcohol especially at night can affect your sleep patterns resulting in poor sleep and your ability to rest and recover. Rest and recovery are very important when it comes to coping with stress.
As well as affecting your physical health excessive drinking can cause serious emotional problems that affect the individual and close relationships. It can also lower peoples self confidence and harm family relationships.
