Why Is Dolphin Encounter One Of The Best Attraction On Stradbroke Island?
Have you ever imagined swimming among a pod of dolphins and watching them play in their native environment? You can on Stradbroke Island.
To get up close and personal with a dolphin, holiday accommodation on Stradbroke Island is only an hour away from the bustling metropolis of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, yet to be there is to feel like you're a thousand miles from anywhere.
North Stradbroke Island, or Straddie as it is known to the locals, is the largest sand island in the world. Pristine white sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see on the western side of the island which faces the Pacific Ocean, while the calm waters of Moreton Bay lap the shores on the eastern side.
The beauty of Stradbroke Island lies in its unspoilt natural environment, which the local community and Stradbroke Island Tourism protect and preserve with the utmost care. In fact, the island has been listed as one of the world's most ecologically important wetlands, with its series of inland freshwater lakes and lagoons.
Marine Life and Dolphins at Straddie
The waters around Stradbroke Island are unique because the warm waters from the tropical north are mixed with the cooler waters from the southern oceans. This rare marine environment hosts a vast array of marine life which Straddie is renowned for.
During the months of June through to November, visitors can view the majestic humpback whales during their annual migration north to the warm waters around the Great Barrier Reef which is one of their main calving grounds.
While the calves are still young, mother and baby return to their Antarctic homelands, swimming close to the shoreline during their return journey. This is the best time to view the spectacular displays of the whales at play.
As a world famous marine park, Moreton Bay is also renowned for the number of dugongs which are found in the area. Dugongs are similar in appearance to dolphins, but have small eyes, a rounded head and nostrils at the top of their large snout. Dugongs feed exclusively on a particular type of sea grass, which is found in abundance around Stradbroke.
One of the most popular attractions for visitors to the island is viewing the dolphins which play in the waves on the ocean side of Stradbroke Island. While it's quite common to find yourself matching wits with a dolphin as you body surf the waves around Amity Point, or discover a pod of dolphins sharing a wave with you as you ride your board to shore at any of the surfside beaches , closer involvement is not encouraged.
While many tourists may consider it cute to pat or feed a dolphin who has been trained to come inshore, the environmentalists who maintain the pristine beauty of North Stradbroke
Island and its environs prefer to see the wildlife left alone.
So, if you want to see dolphins,
Straddie is certainly the place to go. Ride a wave alongside them or swim and do somersaults in the ocean with them, but allow them to play in their own watery wonderland; safe and free from human intervention.
