Why Mental Health Needs to be Humanized Now

Yesterday the 19th March 2011 was the eight anniversary of my brother Fintan's bereavement. While time passes and with it the proximity to the event that changed my life and the lives of family and close friends there is one closeness that shall never erase. That is the link through mental health and the fear that nothing shall change to prevent others from following suit.

Mindsets aside and apart, there has to be a revolution away from primitive mindsets that mental health or the lack thereof is something hushed voices may only speak about while the agony blares with deafness. Yes, there are challenges like any illness but do we treat those with cancer as if they were possessed with an evil omen, no, we do not.

What is especially tragic at this juncture was the appearance of an article in a local rag about the 25% increase in suicides. In another rag, there was mention of teenage girls self-harming but alongside these articles, apathy among the population defines the blockage preventing these girls and other victims to reach out for help.

Have you ever tried to create awareness and possibly organize a healing service to encourage victims that through community they are not alone? Have you perhaps, come across the blatant coldness offered by those who should know better in declining participation in that event? Have you felt the anguish of knowing you should reach out and help victims because you too are a victim quietly crying within the framework of privacy but doors continually close?

Frankly, it is my absolute belief that while concern is magical understanding falls short of the mark of being effective because many do not take the time to offer succour devoid of misconceptions. Theory is all fine and dandy if fixing a car or cutting grass, perhaps necessary in designing a house, but when it comes to health there is more to the person than blood, veins and skin.

The mentally ill are human, even though it is perceived and practiced for centuries that victims are harbingers of evil. Actually, in certain circles shamans believe that mental illness is the soul's connection calling for awareness but because of the influences of a materialistic world, the soul is ignored.

From my own research, it is quite apparent that there are guidelines worth following to substantiate the spiritual link, but as it applies to the physiological health of our body. Most of us ignore the creation of blood cells and then we question sanity or insanity without looking at what we willingly oblige our body to undertake through dehydration.

It is my absolute belief that the spiritual link is as relevant to our existence as our physical body is for enthusiastic communion with the universe in which we live. When we ignore our soul in preference to materialistic pleasures we prevent growth and as spiritual growth is the essence of life worldly affiliation may tarnish and frustrate the link.

We have to remember that not everyone desires numerous possessions but due to abstract clarity of truth, or rather, the camouflaging of truth through dogma prevents us from living and thus we suffer. To combat this intrusion to our sensibilities we have to reach out to connect with God on a personal level and through his wisdom find the path applicable to growth and well-being.

In all things, we have to grow and irrespective of career, especially authoritative power the onus is categorically emphasised that change has to be embraced and permanent paradigms are contra indicative of an open mind. Doctors differ and patients die is a dictum I have believed in and when I was managing farms found it quite advantageous to introduce natural medicines with brilliant success to the frowning eyes of medical representatives. Frankly, I did not give a damn about medial opinion as nature is the mother of all healing and it is nonsensical to disagree with her prowess.

The reluctance of the medical field to embrace natural medicines or healing approaches is foolish, selfish and rather defies their mandate to encourage life. This spiritless approach has to change and then perhaps the population shall change reciprocally.

In the meantime, encourage those in your midst to explore alternative possibilities, become knowledgeable and practice an educational approach towards understanding how the body works and spare not the horses. Lives depend on clear focus towards resolving this inclination towards death and we all know they want to live, but to live without the anguish. Mental health is not a curse that invites ignominy, but equal in expectations of dignity as any illness. God bless!
