The surgeon moves the cannula back and forth through the fatty tissue under the chin, which breaks up the fat. The cannula is attached to a vacuum device, so it can suction the fat out of the body as it goes.

After the surgery, the patient is typically asked to wear some sort of elastic wrap over their chin to help the area to heal properly. Recovery time is usually relatively short. It generally only takes a few days to be able to return to work, as long as the work isn't too physically strenuous. People should exercise caution as they recover and not push their bodies too far too fast.

In the early days of liposuction, areas like the chin were very difficult to operate on because of the delicacy required and because of the closeness to the important nerves and arteries of the face and neck and the windpipe.
