Why The Phal Orchid Is Perfect For Beginners
Flower lovers are consistently drawn to orchids as a treasured house plant and the Phal orchid is a wonderful choice to grow.
With Phal or Philaenopsis orchids, there are a few tips and guidelines that will lead to healthy and vibrant plants season after season.
The Phal orchid is one of the most sought after orchid types because the blooms can remain for months at a time and it is relatively easy to grow and maintain a healthy plant.
In addition, commercial growers of the Phal orchid make it readily available for most occasions in local flower stores and garden centers.
If you are considering a purchase from a big box retailer such as Home Depot, be sure to observe the overall health of the plant before making the purchase. Poor watering habits at these types of stores severely impacts orchids on occasion.
Among the many care tips for orchids, watering is one of the most important. If the roots are dry when you bring your orchid home, begin with a thorough soaking of the roots and then dont water again until the potting medium is dry.
Every couple of weeks apply a quality fertilizer in a diluted solution to provide needed nutrients. Dont over fertilize or damage may occur. Talk with your local grower to get a good recommended fertilizer that is suitable to your weather and geography.
Phal orchids do best in a partially shaded location or filtered sunlight. Intense direct sunlight for long periods will likely damage, if not kill your plant.
If you live in an area that doesnt offer the level of natural sunlight needed, you can use fluorescent lighting place above the orchid about 12 to 14 inches. Use the artificial lighting to simulate the same lighting time frames that natural light would have provided.
Try to maintain a temperature range from 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 85 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.
As a tropical plant humidity is also important for Phal orchids. If you live in a location with 60+% humidity levels, you are probably in good shape. If not, many people place the orchid pot in a tray with small pebbles in the bottom and filled with water to create the needed humidity surrounding the plant. If you use a water tray, be sure the roots of the orchid are not directly in the water.
When the Phal orchid begins to flower, they have incredible durability and longevity. It is also possible to initiate a second flowering from each spike if you prune in a timely fashion.
As the last flower spike fades, carefully observe the spike for small fleshy looking bumps or nodes. Start at the base of the spike and count out three of these nodes and cut the spike about 1 inch above the third node. Ignore any nodes that appear to be dried out.
If your orchid is healthy and you still have season, this pruning process may awaken one or more of the nodes and bring fresh blooms in just a few weeks. This technique can create gorgeous blooms for almost 6 months.
Phal orchids are incredible plants and one of the easiest orchid species to grow in your garden and home. Follow these simple guidelines and enjoy the stunning beauty these unique flowers offer.
