The Phal orchid is one of the most sought after orchid types because the blooms can remain for months at a time and it is relatively easy to grow and maintain a healthy plant.

Among the many care tips for orchids, watering is one of the most important. If the roots are dry when you bring your orchid home, begin with a thorough soaking of the roots and then dont water again until the potting medium is dry.

As a tropical plant humidity is also important for Phal orchids. If you live in a location with 60+% humidity levels, you are probably in good shape. If not, many people place the orchid pot in a tray with small pebbles in the bottom and filled with water to create the needed humidity surrounding the plant. If you use a water tray, be sure the roots of the orchid are not directly in the water.

When the Phal orchid begins to flower, they have incredible durability and longevity. It is also possible to initiate a second flowering from each spike if you prune in a timely fashion.

As the last flower spike fades, carefully observe the spike for small fleshy looking bumps or nodes. Start at the base of the spike and count out three of these nodes and cut the spike about 1 inch above the third node. Ignore any nodes that appear to be dried out.

If your orchid is healthy and you still have season, this pruning process may awaken one or more of the nodes and bring fresh blooms in just a few weeks. This technique can create gorgeous blooms for almost 6 months.
