Will Wi-fi Technology Rise Up Or Come Down?

Now it seems that the development of the Wi-Fi technology will be impeded

. It's mainly because that the main promoter of Wi-Fi technology Intel has published to stop selling the Intel centrino wireless network products. And at the end of August, it's reported that the test and certification of Wi-Fi element has not been completed and the release of the new centrino products will be put off. Then people would suspect the future of Wi-Fi. Will it rise up or come down in the future?

Though Wi-Fi appears to be nice, some manufacturers think its prospect is filled with uncertainty. What's exactly Wi-Fi? It's Wi-fi-wireless Fidelity and it's also called 802.11b standard. It's simliar to the bluetooth technology. Both of them are the short-range wireless transmission technologies applied in office. Wi-Fi is the radio signal which supports the internet connection within the range of 300 foot. With the modem connected to the broadband, any surrounded computers installing Wi-Fi receivers have access to the net. For quite some time, Wifi doesn't play an important role in the network world. It has no united radio spectrum, but a seriese of disorganized devices including the cordless phones and baby monitors.

However, since last year, Wi-fi network has become the concern of the public and it gains fast development. Because many people think that with wi-fi technology, the telephone wire and network cable can be avoided. The user only needs to install the wireless access point and insert wireless network card to the notebook.

You can have the wireless internet access at home or in the office as the wireless LAN is available. Except for the family and enterprise, the wireless communication connecting station is also set up in airport, hotel and coffe shop in America and other places in the world. The user can surf the internet only by inserting the wireless network card into the notebook or PDA.

What are the advantages of Wi-Fi?

First, compared with the bluetooth technology, the coverage of Wi-Fi is much larger. The radio radius of bluetooth technology is only about 15 meters while that of wi-fi can reach 100 meters. Recently, US vivato also launches a new switch which can expand the communication distance of Wifi to 6.5 kilometer.

Second, the current transmission speed can reach 11mb/s. It's far beyond the dia-up networking. It belongs to the broadband and can satisfy the needs of the personal and social needs.

Third, the network architecture of Wifi is very simple. As the manufactuer sets the "hot spot" in the crowded public areas like airport, station, coffee shop and library, the user can have the access to internet as he takes the notebook and PDA which support WLAN in the areas. In other words, it's unecessary for the manufactuer to spend money on the network wiring access. The cost is greatly saved in this way.

However, the Intel president Otellini pointed out that WLAN is in the extravagant speculation. To some extent, the milliions centrino promotion is some sort of mistake. At the same time, the widespreading of WLAN also brings great pressure to the chip price. But this is the essence of the commercial competition.
