Fall is here and rain and early snow has begun to fall. If you work outside and rely on ANSI/ISEA certified high visibility workwear, it's time to stock up on high visibility jackets, reflective pants and other winter work gear. The most important piece of your winter work wardrobe is a high quality visibility jacket. A good jacket will keep you warm, comfortable and safe on the job. Here are the key features to look for when selecting a reflective jacket for winter:

Is it regulation grade? Make sure the coat is ANSI/ISEA 107-2007 Class 3. This means the jacket meets all the visibility standards and features the required reflective materials required by law.

What's it made of? You want a jacket that is both warm and water-proof. Look for a high quality waterproof shell with a plush lining. I personally recommend a polyester blend fleece lining which is both easy to clean and very comfortable.

Does it have the extra features you need? Some safety jackets are reversible, have various pockets or feature detachable sleeves and hoods. Depending on what you do on the job, different features are more useful than others. If you do very hands on work in a snowy environment, for example, you will want to have cuffed sleeves that can tuck into gloves.

Once you have identified the jacket that best fits your specific work needs, opt to purchase it in a slightly larger size. This will accommodate for bulky sweatshirts and sweaters underneath. A high visibility sweatshirt is viable alternative to a reflective safety jacket during the transitional months in early fall and late spring. Also available in waterproof options, these sweatshirts can be layered under a safety jacket, making it easy to adjust to different temperatures throughout the day.
