Little or big worries all add up to anxiety. Some people can be habitual worriers, while some could have had an experience that makes them feel anxious. Some individuals end up having a social phobia, or become panic-stricken. Others can be sad for a prolonged spell of time that makes them very depressed. Effexor is one of the medicines used for treating depression and anxiety in people above 18 years in age.

An imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters used by the brain to send and receive messages is believed to be the cause of various mental disorders in people. Normally, these chemicals function smoothly, but when less of these are available due to a reuptake by the parent nerve, it can lead to disorders such as depression and anxiety. Effexor or Venlafaxine blocks this reuptake, which helps the brain to function normally. This medicine is used for treating depression, as well as anxiety and related disorders.

Everyone has their worries about life adults and children. Everyone is worried over money, health, or family issues at some time or the other, but people with Generalized anxiety disorder [GAD] worry just about everything all the time. There is a constant anxiety in them that things won't work out well. If such a condition continues for 6 months, it is considered to be a manifestation of GAD. Such people have a hard time to relax, they lack concentration, and either they have insomnia or have difficulty in sleeping. In addition, they may have muscular pains, become irritable, feel breathless or lightheaded, and feel tired for seemingly no reason.

Some individuals worry about meeting other people; they have a phobia that they will be subjected to undue scrutiny and judgment by others. This phobia or Social anxiety disorder [SAD] usually begins in adolescence, and can happen to boys and girls. People with this condition avoid meeting new people, speaking in public, eating or drinking publicly, attending parties, even using public restrooms. Their anxiety can reach the point where they become unable to work and it can affect their relationships also. If they do go to parties, people with SAD are at high risk for taking alcohol or drugs to help them to relax in a social situation.

Though it can affect teenagers and adults, the rich and poor alike, Depression is something that everyone does not understand. Experts say that it hits girls more than boys. Some research points at genes, but that is not the single causative factor. There's no knowing what sad experience will affect a person for what length of time. Losing a pet or a friend, financial worries, tension in the family, conflicting relationships, going through stressful situations which lead to violence in the family or community, being homeless or poor, or having ill-health, can all lead to a depressed state. When teenagers are in this state of mind, they may be de-motivated, lack concentration and energy, and start skipping school on some excuse or the other. Some individuals may eat less, while some may start to eat more and more; such people may not even know that they have depression.

At its' worst, depression can make an individual contemplate suicide. There can be feelings of sadness, worthlessness, guilt, irritability, anger, anxiety, tiredness, lack of concentration, an inability to find pleasure in anything, leading to a withdrawal from family and friends. Depression is considered to be more than feeling sad, because it can last for weeks to months to years.

The Effexor XR tablets are used in treating Panic disorder that causes intense fear, unexpectedly. Such people are said to experience at least 4 of the following symptoms within 10 minutes of the panic attack: chest pain or discomfort, palpitations or fast heartbeat, dizziness, feeling of detachment or unreality, fear of loss of control over any situation, difficulty in breathing, fear of death, perspiration, cold sweats, hot flashes, nausea, or trembling. Once an attack is over, the individual may be in constant fear of having another attack for the next 1 month, and worry why they are feeling the way they do.

Before taking Effexor, inform the psychiatrist if you are suffering from Bipolar disorder [manic depression], epilepsy, seizures, any liver/kidney disease, any cardiac problem [including recent heart attack, unstable heart disease, congestive heart failure, or high cholesterol], hypertension, glaucoma, bleeding/clotting disorder, thyroid disorder, dehydration, or hyponatremia [untreated mineral imbalance]. Inform the treating doctor of any allergies you have, and all the medicines you take including prescription-OTC-nutritional supplements-herbal products, for some of these may not work well with Venlafaxine.

Individuals who are allergic to Venlafaxine or those who are taking an MAOI will not be able to take this medicine. Aspirin, NSAIDs, anti-coagulants, anti-psychotic medications, antifungal drugs, mood stabilizers, protease inhibitors for HIV/AIDS, medicines for treating gastric problems, tricyclic antidepressants, other SSRIs or SNRIs, Triptans, herbal medicines like St. John's Wort, or narcotic painkillers all interact with it. Alcohol doesn't go well with it either.

Side effects commonly associated with use of this medicine include: headaches, drowsiness, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, yawning, dizziness, blurred vision, constipation, upset stomach, dry mouth, or perception of change in taste. Should you experience an allergic reaction such as hives, itching, rash, swelling, difficulty in breathing, or severe dizziness, the medicine must be stopped at once and the doctor consulted. Serious side effects that need to be immediately reported to the doctor include: extreme or unusual changes in mood, chest pain, tachycardia [rapid heartbeat], seizures/tremors, muscular cramps, decreased libido, hypertension, severe headache, changes in vision, ringing sound in the ears, difficulty in urinating, dark stools, or dark vomit.

As usual in pregnancy and while lactating, women have to be very careful about medications, so all such women, including those who plan to have a child, must consult their doctor before taking this medicine. It is not meant for children, while more attention has to be paid to older people who take it. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels will require regular monitoring, so laboratory appointments must be kept.

Even if you feel better, keep taking the medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not attempt to treat yourself by beginning, stopping, increasing or decreasing the dose. Venlafaxine can take a little time to show it is working. Usually, the sleeping pattern becomes better first, and it is considered to give relief from pain early during treatment, while it could take up to 6 weeks to bring about any significant change in the mood or mental make-up.
