Your Life Purpose: The True Starting Point For New Mompreneurs
When a mom gets to a place where she is ready to finally take the first step to start
a business and achieve her own level of financial and entrepreneurial independence, she often finds herself paralyzed at the daunting task of where to begin. Questions start bubbling up. How do I start a business? How much money do I need? Do I need to get a lawyer? What forms do I need to fill out to get started? How much money do I need to fund this company? What type of business am I going to be good at running? Will being an entrepreneur make me happy or is it going to cause problems in my marriage? And on and on...
In my line of work as a start-up business coach for moms, I get asked one question up front with almost every client I meet. Part of it has to do with my intake process, but another part of it has to do with our eternal quest for meaning in life. This one question is absolutely critical to your business success and something that I am not sure all of us spend enough time contemplating. It is also a question that women seem to think about more than men for some reason. So, what is this big and important question?
How can I build a business around my life purpose?
Wow, that's a pretty big idea that might cause a lot of people to just shut down right there, but have no fear I have a simple solution for you! You really have to do a lot of soul searching and spend some time on this idea if you want to come to a place of truth, but it is work that will make your life more meaningful and your work more authentic. Skipping this introspective step on your entrepreneurial journey can land you in a business that you hate. On the other hand, taking the time to look at yourself and gain clarity on your life purpose can not only translate into a successful business, but a much more fulfilling life.
Now, I know the idea of natural born talents or life purpose may not seem to be relevant to your financial pursuits, but when you are creating a business, if you are not honed in on exactly why YOU are the one to bring this business to life (and how this business will enrich your family member's lives) then most likely you will end up not starting the right business for you. Simply put, a lot of business owners start businesses with the idea that they want to make money quickly rather than focusing on starting a business that will not only bring them money, but will bring abundance into all areas of her life. If you are going to be focusing your energy on something outside of your family, you want to make sure that this business will provide a vehicle for you to bring your natural-born gifts to the world.
When thinking about your life purpose, don't get bogged down with details. To get to the bottom of this big question, you simply want to think about your core motivation, your personal values and who you naturally want to help. Here are 7 questions to ask yourself if you are looking to develop a business around your natural-born gifts:
1.What are your 10 most favorite activities (outside food, sex and anything needed for survival)?
2.What are your top 5 strengths? 5 weaknesses?
3.What positive messages have you received over and over about your personality or talents? (ie: you are a good listener, you are comfortable speaking in front of people, you make people feel like they can tell you anything, you are good at connecting others, you call things like you see them (honest), you are good at seeing things that others don't, etc)
4.List your top 5 values and write a thought about how you live by those values.
5.If you had $1,000,000 in the bank and everyone in your family was happy and healthy, what would you do with your time everyday?
6.What type of cause, person or group do you feel most passionate about (animals, special needs, homeless, children, mothers, recovering addicts, etc)?
7.What are 7 things you could do right now that embody your core strengths and your values and give you a means to help the cause you are passionate about?
By taking less than an hour of your time to answer these 7 questions, you will have a clear picture about what your true gifts are and how you can help make other people's lives better by living your life's true purpose.
