From my experience I would plant herbs, this is due to some herbs repelling some pests that can compromise the vitality of your chickens, e.g.insects, worms and ants. You could grow rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano if you wanted; these can then be used within your cooking to create some truly delicious meals.

There you have it, your very own multi-purpose chicken coop, all it required was a little ingenuity and you have fully made use of the space you had. The finished hen house could very well be more beautiful than what you first thought, plus the depth of the soil is a great way to control the heat coming from the sun, keeping your hens at a nice temperature therefore improving their healthiness.
