"Justified" as the Latest Heavy-Hitting Crime Drama on Satellite TV
A lot of people might know Elmore Leonard the author for his other projects which were adapted into moving pictures--"Get Shorty" and "Jackie Brown," respectively. But a lot of his fans might not know that there is another Leonard novel or two that has materialized on the small screen over on FX. Based on U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens, who made an appearance in not one, but two of Leonard's novels, "Justified" is a new kind of drama that deals with the law through a more nuanced moral compass. If you've been missing all of the action behind "The Wire" and aren't so into "Treme," then this might be exactly the sort of drama you've been waiting for to hit satellite tv and bring back some of the more down-home style of police work.
Set in the green rolling hills of Kentucky, "Justified" follows the daily life of Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens, who was previously working in Florida but happened to get too much into handling the law with his own moral compass, putting him at odds with both the shady criminal underworld and the people organized to take them down. After overstepping his boundaries a few too many times, Givens found himself reassigned from the beautiful, tropic beaches of South Florida to the remote and slightly different setting of middle-of-nowhere Kentucky. As a crafty man, Given takes this all in stride, and gets into enforcing the law as he sees fit in his new neck of the woods.
While most of the shows on satellite tv seem more focused on getting into complicated sub-plots and time-based linear story lines that keep viewers glued to the edge of their seats, "Justified" takes an older approach. It's a character-based show, one made exponentially better considering the fact that actor Timothy Olyphant does an excellent job with the lead, and it's definitely picking up steam with critics and viewers alike as more people tune in to see how well things happen to be done. Olyphant is also known for his stunning performance on HBO's highly acclaimed series "Deadwood," so it's no wonder that he is able to hold his own as the lead actor here. Whether it's the well-written witty banter or the more action-packed sequences, it's definitely a different attitude than the rest of the dramas involving the law on satellite tv currently, and for that the show should most definitely be rewarded.
For viewers who have been in search of a riveting drama that manages to do well by the genre of police thrillers out there, "Justified" definitely comes closer to that goal than most others who are trying to work in the same style. And because it has the fortune of being based on such rich source material and also helmed by capable directors, who are in charge of excellent actors, the chances of it lasting past this first season are incredibly high. If you're going to get into it, get into it now, before it turns into the latest darling of satellite tv and you have to hear countless different people talk about how it is reviving the art of the serial drama--which it most definitely is.
