How does ellaOne work?

Ulipristal acetate works by modulating the action of progesterone, a natural hormone found in females. Progesterone effectively controls the process of ovulation. When you take an ellaOne pill after sex, this process gets delayed as ulipristal acetate tells the brain not to release eggs from the ovary. As a result of this progesterone-like action of the compound, you don't become pregnant.

How do I take the pill?

The revolutionary birth control pill is available in strength of 30mg, only on prescription. So you need to consult your doctor before taking it. It does not matter whether you take it before, during or after meal, as long as you take it within 120 hours from sex. But don't take it before having sex; it won't prevent pregnancy. Remember that ellaOne will not work if you throw up within 3 hours from taking the pill. Also, the pill works when taken during menstrual cycle.

What are the contraindications?

ellaOne is not prescribed if you are breastfeeding. It is advisable that you should not breastfeed for 36 hours after taking the emergency contraceptive pill
