Four principal features of the LAP-BAND overcome the dilemmas that are present with procedures such as gastric bypass and other methods of stomach stapling. These are outlined below.1. The LAP-BAND Induces SatietyThe LAP-BAND works primarily by providing a feeling of satiety, a feeling that you are not hungry. Even if you have not been eating for a prolonged period you do not feel hungry. You will wake up in the morning not feeling hungry. Food...more
The surgical treatment of obesity is called bariatric surgery after the Greek words, baros, meaning "weight," and iatrikos, meaning "the art of healing." This is the most rapidly growing area of surgical practice in the Western world today. This reflects the ability of bariatric surgical procedures to provide a solution to an otherwise insoluble problem and the evolution of safer, less invasive and more conservative forms of procedures.The...more
We take four factors into account when determining whether this might be an appropriate procedure for you. These are the current level of your weight, the problems that this state of obesity generates, the confirmation that you have made significant effort at weight loss by other means and the confidence we have that you understand what you are getting yourself into and have the commitment to fulfill your part of the partnership. We discuss these factors in more detail below. There Is ObesityObesity is a disease that exists in our community when the body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30. A BMI greater than 35 is described as severe obesity. Until recently, we would not wish to proceed with this procedure if the BMI were less than 35. At a BMI of 35 or greater there is a clear risk to a long healthy life, there are generally significant problems associated with obesity and there is known to be a poor outcome from any alternative therapy.Recently, we have completed a major study of people with a BMI of between 30 and 35 and have found that those who had the LAP-BAND had much better weight loss, improvement in health and improvement in quality of life than a matched group who had the...more

Obesity is a disease in which fat has accumulated to the extent that health is impaired. Note that there are three key components to this definition:1. "Obesity is a disease..." It is only recently that major health authorities such as the World Health Organization and the US Federal Department of Health have acknowledged obesity as a disease. This change is most important as the disease of obesity can now begin to claim attention and an allocation of resources as do all other diseases.2. "...in which fat has accumulated..." Fat is the key element of obesity. Primarily we are interested in how much fat there is in the body. We are not focused on weight per se. However, as we do not have a simple office method for directly measuring the fat content of the body, we have to use surrogate measures. We could use weight alone, but this would be terribly misleading. The tall person is always likely to be heavier than the shorter person. Therefore, as a minimum, we have to take into account the height as well. Currently, our best way to do this is by using the body mass index of the BMI. We will discuss how we calculate the BMI and look at its strengths and weaknesses below.3. "...to the...more
