2012: The End of the World?
Some suggest that the December 21, 2012, date will be a positive time
, the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new age of renewal in the spiritual or even genetic sense, an exaltation of the human race. Others believe that the 2012 is the time when the earth purges itself of humanity, either because of religious judgment or due to humanitys inability to assimilate to the natural world (indeed, because of its inclination to separate itself from nature). Even those who may not be inclined to believe that the exact date December 21, 2012, is the end of the world are concerned about the possibility of mass extinction or natural disaster, some which they have been worried about happening for decades. It is a possibility that the December 21, 2012, date is not a product of the supernatural but of the supernatural, such as a geomagnetic reversal of the magnetic poles or a supervolcano such as the Yellowstone caldera erupting. Another natural disaster possibility is a severe sun storm that causes a flare that affects the very infrastructure of our way of life. A solar flare that reaches out far enough to disrupt our electronics can cause a mass catastrophe with a geomagnetic reversal that disrupts our power grids, dependant on the geomagnetic poles in their present directions imagine, if you will, a life without electricity. Possible, certainly. However, most of us have grown accustomed to an electronic existence, and we have grown dependent on the ability of electricity to allow us to do our jobs, give us directions, hold our information, provide our water, drive our sewage systems, destroy our virtual financial system an apocalypse does not have to affect nature to destroy our way of life. And some people predict that the 2012 date will be the day that the solar storm will bring high-energy plasma to our magnetic field with enough effect to reverse our geomagnetic poles. Other scientists protest that there is no connection between geomagnetic shifts and solar storm maximums. They argue that, at most, a solar maximum would lead to a disruption of our cell phone system and our satellites. However, it would be folly for us to ignore the possibility of a strong solar storm terrible enough to destroy our infrastructure as we know it on December 21, 2012 or maybe just in the year 2012, as many scientists predict. The East and West coasts of the United States, the central hubs of the American infrastructure, would be hit the hardest in 2012. At the very least, we should prepare for the devastation that a geomagnetic reversal could cause by making our infrastructure less centralized so that if one aspect is destroyed, the entire aspect of the system is destroyed.
