4 Diet Myths Debunked
One of the hardest parts of losing weight can be sorting through all of the information
that you hear in the news, online, or from family or friends.
There is a lot of great information to be found out there, but there is also a lot of misinformation. Here are some common diet myths:
Myth: Crash dieting will help you lose weight.
Fact: Crash diets may seem like it will help you lose weight, and it may, but only in the short term. The truth is that when you starve yourself you lose muscle along with fat, and this can slow down your metabolism. This means that your body will burn fewer calories, and it will become harder to lose weight in the long term.
Myth: Low-fat diets are best for weight loss.
Fact: On the surface this myth seems like it should be true, but it isnt. The reason is twofold: First, the body needs a certain amount of fat in order to function properly. Second, low-fat or fat free foods are often still high in calories, fillers, and sugar. It is ultimately the mount of calories that you consume that will cause weight gain, not the amount of fat. The best thing you can do is eat more unsaturated fats, and avoid saturated fats.
Myth: Carbohydrates make you fat.
Truth: As said before, it is not carbohydrates that make you gain weight; it is excess calorie intake. The real problem is eating overly processed carbohydrates (white bread, cake, pastries), which offer little nutritional value. The other problem is portion control. Carbohydrates are natural fuel for our brains and bodies and there is no need to cut them out of your diet. Instead, always choose whole grain options, and stick with smaller portion sizes.
Myth: Diets must mean deprivation.
Truth: Losing weight does not have to be an all-or-nothing situation. A diet will never be successful if you drastically cut calories, or deprive yourselves of all of the things that you enjoy. The most successful dieters begin by making smarter food choices and incorporating more physical activity. Try learning healthy food substitutions, increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables that you eat, and exercise regularly. This will create a healthy lifestyle that you can live with.
