When you start you will have to do everything yourself; that means long hours, long hours and more long hours. That can be something of a shock after the relaxed nature of school, college and unemployment. Are you up to it?

Whatever your age there's an element of risk in being in business as there's no guaranteed income at the end of every week or month as there is when you are in salaried employment. At the same time, you have people hounding you to pay your monthly bills. That all adds to pressure and stress you will feel. Can you take it?

When you are young and in business you will have to deal with the "I didn't get where I am today dealing with young whippersnappers" attitude from older business people and suppliers, particularly men. They have served an "apprenticeship" working their way up the system over 20 or 30 years to reach where they are. Because of their own irrational prejudices they will distrust you and resent your efforts.

Other business people will tend not to take you seriously because of your age. And if you look as though you are only 16, even though you are 22, that can be off-putting to a business person who is 40 years your senior.

When you are young, people will say you are and expect you to be inexperienced means that you aren't up to the job, are likely to let them down, cause them problems or not have the technical ability they're looking for. If their hard earned money rides on the actions of someone they think inexperienced, they may ultimately play safe and give the work to someone they regard as being more experienced and better able to do the job. For that reason you will have to work harder and harder to prove to them that you're professional, can meet deadlines and do what you say you will do. Don't be resentful if you are even asked for references; think of this as the customer being interested in what you have to offer.

When you're young you may not be able to charge as much for your services or product. Customers or clients will bargain hard with you, knowing that you probably need the business. Worse still, you may be aware of your own weakness in this area and consequently ask for less than you should. This is a problem for everyone starting up a new business, whatever their age.

When you are young an awareness of your own inexperience means that you tend to lack confidence in yourself which is reflected in your business dealings. People may think that they can rip you off.

Because you have been in business, others may see you as unemployable later on if you need a job. They may think you are too independent and not a team player won't be able to take orders from anyone else. They may also say to themselves, "you obviously can't be a good business person, or you wouldn't want a job with me now".
