A House Near The River In Riga (Part Three)
"Charlie" had left the house and there was little believe that he would ever come back as he had gone by bus which meant he would not be able to smell his way back to the house and for awhile there was a certain peace though in all truth that little mutt was missed by all. It was not long however before we heard the same noises as before coming from the place near the toilet though Victoria and I just figured something had fallen and with this explanation we went to sleep that night.
The following day however I woke up and went to the toilet and before I could actually get to it, I clearly saw a small brown creature crawling around and did not even bother to do what I needed to. It being my tremendous fear of mice and rats that made me simply forget all about what ever requirements I might have had. It was upon seeing that mouse that I ran to tell Victoria what I thought I had seen near the toilet and that it was probably what had made the noise the night before. Victoria adding that that had more than likely been the reason why Charlie had been barking and what we had heard on that night on which he had been so anxious to run in to that room. This in fact teaching us a lesson that if a dog starts to bark there must be a logical reason which should not be ignored as we did Charlie that night.
Victoria not as frightened of mice as I was, went to the toilet to reveal to me that I had been in error when I said there was a mouse in her house; for the truth was that it was a rat. This information, naturally not making me feel any better; for it was to the contrary. Victoria explained to me and in fact showed me with her hands how big a mouse was as opposed to a rat. This being something new to me who prior to that moment had always believed that a mouse was the size of a rat while a rat was the size of a small cat yet Victoria made me see that I had been misinformed yet for some reason, I was still afraid of going near the toilet. It being my belief that rats attacked people and did so in packs though this again Victoria informed me was not the case.
It however did not take Victoria long to inform me that she had been in error herself when she stated that there was a rat in the house for her latest count took their number up to three big ones. This information prompting me to suggest that perhaps buying poison to get rid of these rather unwelcome guests might be appropriate. Victoria did agree and in fact went out and purchased such a poison to rid ourselves of these unpleasant rodents. She bringing home a poison which came in plastic bags which she was told should be placed along with some food which they might eat. This being precisely what she did yet the poison one could buy without a license was not of the strongest variety which in fact did not kill our rats.
This fact almost terrifying me, as for some reason I am really afraid of rats. This due to the image I have in my mind which real or otherwise is of a rats attacking people in groups with their razor sharp teeth. As for the rats, it was after having bought the poison that Victoria in fact discovered that their number was even higher than 3 and perhaps even ran in to the double digits as she had seen 6 with her own two eyes. The night which followed was one in which Victoria and I, almost got no sleep what so ever and it not being for reasons of our activities in bed but my worry over the rats in the house and a small mouse which had even made its way in to what was then our bedroom.
The poison had clearly been a failure as the rats were basically enjoying themselves, eating the little bags which Victoria had placed in large quantities yet we were informed that with that kind of poison it would take three days for them to die. After having heard this I got the idea that perhaps it would be faster to wait for them to die of old age than from the poison yet such was the case which even worried us that their numbers might be increasing through a process known as breading.
It was the following day that Victoria got a cat from somebody who sold it to her for as low as two dollars yet as soon as we took the cat home; all it did was get out of the box we carried him in and hide somewhere in the house. This creating a most comic situation that now we had rats and a cat which was too afraid to come out of his hiding place and according to its ex-owner would need a few days to get used to its new environment. All of which making us truly desire the return of the little mutt whose barking had been keeping these rats at bay for so long.
At this point, it was all these factors that led me to believe that Victoria and I should go spend the night in a hotel, as not only did we have an abundance of rats in the house but were not even sure how many. I, for one thing will never forget the fear of wanting to get out of that house that I ran as fast as I could to get away from those rats who had even invaded the area of the house where they kept the stove.
It was with this plan that we took a taxi to a hotel, where we spent that particular night in some comfort that included a shower with hot water as well as a toilet that had running water but did not include small four legged animals. Victoria that morning slept late as was her habit while I went to get breakfast and it was in fact while I went to a nice little place that I mentioned our problem with rats to a lady who worked there. This lady then recommending a pest controller, who as a matter of fact was her sister.
As can be expected, the lady who had been so highly recommend, came over and placed poison where she knew they were bound to be which she told us would make our rats suffer for want of air and as a result of which cause them to run out of the house; in need of air. It in fact being outside the house where they would die. This being more than desirable for the obvious reason of us not ending up with a bunch of dead rats in the house which she calculated could have numbered as high as 20. Another thing she added was that their dying around the house would also be better for the reason that other rats in the area would smell that some of their own had died there and therefore avoid that place.
The problem was over or at least the one with the rats and as for Victoria and me, this is a story that would end as did our relationship though perhaps our experiences with each other will remain with us forever. As, for myself it was while on the bus back to Warsaw that I felt a sense of sadness that I was leaving Riga yet I also got the impression that I would be back though perhaps not to see Victoria but for something or somebody completely different yet this remains to be seen; for I have yet to return to Riga.
In conclusion, I would say that I did enjoy my time in Riga and would gladly go back and though I can not say when and where that will be, I can say with all sincerity that I will never forget the rats, Charlie, babushka, Victoria and the house by the river.
