Abortion Is A Choice, A Basic Human Right
A girl gets pregnant at eighteen and decides she cant handle the responsibility
. A struggling mother with a poor excuse of a husband thinks that another addition to her long list of dependents will do more harm than good. A rape victim would rather get rid of the memory of the trauma than torture herself and the kid all their lives. The list of scenarios goes on, ending with the easiest escapeabortion. Tell me then, is this decision an act of adulthood or immaturity?
That these women decide to end their problem this way leads to a hundred speculations. And a hundred more questions pop up. Are they doing the right thing? Are they sure? Arent they supposed to think about it a little bit more? Isnt that a sin against God? Will this decision really make their life better? Cant they wait for nine months and opt for adoption instead? Can their conscience bear it? What about the kids future? What if it becomes a tycoon or even a president someday? Does something so innocent deserve this fate? We cant know. But there might be more questions of the same kind in the back of these womens heads.
We will never be sure of their fears and doubts. We can never feel their emotionalnot to mention psychologicalpain. Those demons are theirs to bear. And we are just mere observers. We cant really judge them. We are not in their shoes. Decisions such as abortion leave a permanent mark to these women. The memory will stay with them for years, even until they die. They might even dwell in remorse. They are, after all, humansnot some soulless characters in a bad movie.
So if you are to assess the situation again, have these women acted maturely or rather rashly? They have come to a very difficult crossroad in their lives, some of them even younger than most. Some of them have to make this decision at eighteen, fifteen even. If they believe theyll only give their kid a terrible life if they let it live, can we dare say that they have, however uncommon, thought of their kids welfare as well? The same goes to every woman who undergoing the same predicament, no matter how different the situation is. Yes, there are other methods like adoption. But other women just do not have the luxury of keeping and nurturing life (or another life in other cases) for nine months. And when we go right down to it, we really cant dictate them of what to do with their lives. If they decide on abortion, it is their choice. And choice is a basic human right.
In closing let me quote these views on abortion and women. First is from Florynce R. Kennedy. Here it goes: If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament. Stephen Singular took this further by stating this in his book, The Wichita Divide: The Murder of Dr. George Tiller, the Battle over Abortion, and the New American Civil War: You can't really protect women or men from their choices, so let them have their own lives and trust the process. Given the history of society's efforts to control women's sexuality and reproduction, this remained a revolutionary idea. No wonder it disturbed and frightened some people so deeply.
Enough said. Lets just leave other people to their choices, shall we? And hope that they made the right decision.
